I recently bought 2nd hand Toshiba A10 laptop which has a modem on com port 3 but when I try to connect the computer says it can't open the port. We are on dial up. Also we have no manual and OS needs to be activated soon. There is no conflict showing in Device Manager. Cheers Sam

Hi, I assume you have tried to open it in the usual way by pressing the eject button. If this has not worked, switch on the machine. Get a large paper clip, and straighten it out. Near the eject button on the tray, insert the paper clip into this hole and push it in and as you do so the tray should open. Hope this helps.
Right click on my computer. Then click on manage. Then click device manager. On the right hand side scroll down to sound, video and game controllers. There will be a + sign close to it. click on it the list opens. Check whether there is Realtek AC97 audio. If there is question mark or anything else other than picture of speaker, or if it is not at all there (ie. any sound driver) close the window. The download the realtek AC97 driver (WDM_A406.EXE). Once you have downloaded it, double click on that EXE file. wait till it completes installation. Restart computer. Good luck
I bought my sister a Dell laptop that didn't have a dial up modem in it, never saw one that didn't have one. Dell sells a dial up modem that goes into the usb port for about $35, which I sent to her and it works. Basically it is just an external dial up modem. Give it a try, just call the dell help phone number.
that completely depends on what kind of internet service you have. The laptop has a Ethernet connector so, if you have a internet connection in your home you should be able to connect it with a wire to the router or the modem and it should work.
The memory is located under the keyboard Remove batt and cables open screen pop out the rectangular panel surrounding the on off buttons remove the 3 screws and lift up the keyboard to access the memory Dont ask me why they made it this complicated Manual can be got here http://126.96.36.199/support/download/files_downloads/SA40/SA40EXUM.PDF
Hi, A couple of questions first...Does the computer have a network port connection somewhere?
Do you already have the modem or is there a modem in your laptop that you wish to use?
Have you setup your account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
What type of Internet Service are you having or getting?
How old is the Laptop?
Why I ask is that generally if you have already setup your account with your provider, and depending on the type of account you have chosen they provide the modem and cables for you. All you have to do is plug it all in.
Please let me know and I can give you more details.
