Your anti-theft has been activated. If you have the manual that came with your radio, follow the instructions from the pamphlet. If not, go to the dealer and get the code for the radio. By US law, the dealer must provide the anti-theft code free of charge. Once you have the code, press and hold the mode and scan buttons, and as soon as 1000 displays, immediately release the buttons. Enter the code using preset buttons 1,2,3 and 4. 1 for the first digit, 2 for the second digit and so on, until you've typed in the correct code. Press and hold mode and scan again, until safe again appears on the display. If entered correctly, a radio frequency will display after a few seconds and your radio can be used again :D

How to exit the 1998 VW Passat radio out of SAFE mode:
IMPORTANT NOTE: You must have the security anti-theft code for your VW radio from the car manufacturer, or from a VW dealer!
The sequence of radio programming is:
1. Push simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys until on the screen will appear "1000" displayed.
2. Release keys. No more push on "SCAN" and "RDS" keys because otherwise number "1000" will be considered as first safe code attempt.
3. By the #1 key you will set up the first safe code digit.
4. By the #2 key you will set up the second safe code digit.
5. By the #3 key you will set up the third safe code digit.
6. By the #4 key you will set up the four-th safe code digit.
7. Then push again simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys for confirm this safe code. On the screen will be displayed "SAFE" notice. Release keys! For few seconds a radio frequence will be displayed. The radio is now ready for use!

S70 instrument cluster not working

Hi,

I had a similar problem. The speedometer didn't work. This is going to sound a little strange, but, at some point the battery died. When the new battery was put in, all of a sudden the speedometer worked again. Can't explain it, but it's true. Maybe just disconnecting and re-connecting the battery would help you, BUT BE CAREFUL about the radio. When the battery is disconnected (or dies) you have to put the radio code in again to use your radio. Make sure you have the 4-digit radio code before you disconnect the battery. If you enter it 3 times and fail, google what to do then.

Dead Battery equals Stereo lock

You must get the 4 digit security code and enter it into the radio by pressing the AM and FM2 buttons at the same time. Then enter code via the preset buttons. Press button #1 until you get the first digit of the code then press button #2 until you get the 2nd digit and so on for the 3rd and 4th digits. when code is on the display press the AM and FM2 buttons again and radio should come back on. if it reads safe you have the wrong code #. You can get the code from a dealer for a small fee. They need to remove the radio to get a serial # on the radio chassis.

1998 AUDI QUATTRO BATTERY DIED. RADIO IS NOW IN SAFE MODE.

Unfortunately, if I am reading this problem properly, you have a Blaupunkt radio in your Audi. Disconnection from power source and reconnection without proper (un)locking code will result in the permanent disabling of said radio.

It's a common problem in factory Blaupunkt radios installed in Volvo's, BMW's Audi's, etc. A very effective anti-theft mechanism indeed!
