Question about Canon PowerShot SD750 / IXUS 75 Digital Camera

Turn on camera but the lcd sceen is black

I got a powershot S500. when I turn on the camera the lcd sceen stays black . I could use the menu or setting and it appear on the lcd sceen,  but no picture is beening display .  If I take a picture  all it will show is a black sceen. Please give me some advise.

I just got a completely new in the box CANON SD750 today and I am so disappointed to say that for the past hour I have been struggling with a completely black screen. In shooting mode, the screen stays blank however menus and do appear just fine..which .lead me away from an lcd malfunction to a lens problem. lens was fine too. So, narrowed it down to a problem inside the camera with the communication of the picture between the lens to the lcd screen. Thanks to the info on Fixya, I found out that it is a factory CCD image sensor problem. I am still completely bummed out but at least I can go to bed and not drive myself crazy for the rest of the night.Going to return the camera bright and early tomorrow!

I tried all the solutions offered on the net and none worked except one. It simply said "hit the camera with the palm of your hand" (when it is on) and the screen will return. I thought, well I have nothing to lose and so I hit it on the side and sure enough the LCD is again working !!! Contacted Canon prior to this and they had no idea but suggested I send it in to be repaired at a cose of $163.50 Australian. Pleasant staff they have, but no help in solving what looks like a common problem of Canon cameras. I will have second thoughts purchasing Canon from here on in.

I contacted Canon with the same problem. They told be to take the battery and memory card out for 20 minutes. Reinstall and push display button 3 times. If this did not work and I still had a black screen I would need to return for repair. There would be a $99.00 charge just to look at the camera. Then Canon would contact me with the estimated repair charges. As a last resort I tried hitting my camera on the palm of my hand. IT WORKED!!!! YAY JACK!!!! BOO CANON

I had the same problem with my Canon PowerShot SD750 and was thinking I'd have to buy a new camera. I read Jack's solution and thought I'd give it a try since, as he said, I had nothing to lose. Two whacks against my palm and the screen image is back. Thanks for the suggestion!

Powershot screen is black

Dear 31jp:

It sounds at first glance as though you're probably experiencing a failed CCD image sensor. This model has an product advisory out on that very issue.

First try pressing the display (DISP) button on the back of your camera several times to see if your image returns at any time. One of the three display modes is "off" to preserve battery life. Your problem may be as simple as inadvertently pressing this button into the off mode.

If that doesn't work, try doing a reset and then removing your batteries from the camera for a few minutes, reinstalling them and turning the camera on to test the LCD screen.

If your screen is still black, but you can clearly see pictures taken previous to the problem, and you can clearly see the menu system when you press the MENU button, then you likely have the CCD sensor problem. Contact Canon Tech Support at 1-800-828-4040 to have the camera repaired. If yiou are experiencing the image sensor probem as described in the product advisory, the camera will be repaired at no charge regardless of how long you've owned it.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
HeavyDLB

LCD won't work in shoot mode, but work in playback mode

Turn on camera but the lcd sceen is black

Have you checked the display mode you're in? If you have the display set to off (to save power) and also the picture review time set to off, then you'll just see a black screen. Try pressing the 'Disp.' button below the screen when the camera is on - it should cycle through different settings with each press: Off, On, On with picture info. Similarly, in the playback mode this will show you more or less info about the picture you are viewing.

Even if the display is switched off, if you have your 'review' option in the menu set to anything other than Off (i.e. 2 seconds), then you should see the picture you've taken appear on the screen straight after taking it.

If it's not that, then I don't know the answer....
