Question about Dell HP-150SS (HP150SS) 150-Watt Power Supply

150 W ATX Power Supply HP-150SS

How can start this whitout pc ? This is not a normal psu , is a DELL. Shorting the green (Pin 14) to ground doesn't work on the Dell power supply. It does NOT conform to ATX standards. Pin 14 on this power supply is a ground. I haven't been able to find the right combination either though, but I know the grey wire (Pin 11) starts the process. The problem is another set of pins must also be shorted for it to stay powered up, but I haven't been able to figure out which.

What is the 6 pin

You can replace the power supply in this Dell with a normal ATX power supply. Make sure the total wattage is equal to or greater than the old power supply.

Anytime you see a Green wire in a computer, (Personal Computer), power supply's ->power cable, it is for the Soft Power On function.
This way there isn't a cable, (Cord), going from the Power On switch to the power supply.
These are ATX style of power supply's.

The Black insulated wires are Ground wires. ALL of them.

There was a older power supply made, and this was the AT style.

To provide a solution, I'm going to give you some information on the power cables, for Both of these styles of power supply's, then some advice.

1.This is info, and photos of the older AT power supply's power cables,
http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#oldpc

2.This is the newer ATX style power cable, and more specifically the 20-pin version,
http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atxmain20
Scroll down the page to view the 24-pin power cable, and then scroll down some more, to view the 20+4-pin power cable.

ALL ATX design power supply's use Pin 16 for PS ON, (Soft Power On), which is a Green wire, and ANY Black wire. ALL Black wires are a ground. Pin 15 has a Black wire, and is normally used to put a jumper in, from it to Pin 15. This turns the power supply on. There will be a small spark, and the chance of getting shocked.

What you are doing essentially, is using a personal computer power supply as a laboratory power source, therefore I cannot advise you further, as it is a Safety Hazard.

Sounds like it's not grounding properly. Safest thing to do would be to replace the power supply. Hope this helps.

ATX PSU are enabled by a signal on the green wire pin 16.

Shorting of pin 16 to ground (0VDC) will enable the PSU

Hello diallo

Do you mean which wire is the +5VDC on?

There is an industry standard for coloring of computer power supply wires.

+5VDC is on the RED wires.

HERE is a link on Computer Power Supplies "ABCs" that will be very helpful to you, I think.

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for you or, of course, if you have any further questions.

Thank you
BJ

If connector have two big brown wires (pins 1 and 11) and a small brown wire (pin 2). then short circuit the small brown wire with a big brown wire (pins 1 and 2).
Also short circuit the small black wire (pin 16) with a big black wire (pin 17).
Ps. The Power Supply needs a minimal load ex: 1A.

All you have to do is connect the green wire (normally thinner than the rest of the cables) to any black wire. This can be done easily with a short piece of wire. If the power supply doesn?t immediately turn on (within 2 seconds) remove the wire, you may have connected it to the wrong wires, although most power supplies won?t allow a short to damage the unit. Once on, the power supply isn?t loaded so the voltages won?t be as stable as if they were used in a full PC, however it?ll be sufficient for most uses. It?s not a good idea to leave a power supply on in this fashion for a long period of time too."
