Just got the Tascam 2488 neo. I'm concerned that due to the size of the room I can't place the unit far enough away from the speakers to ensure I don't damage the unit with electro magnetic fields....

Assuming you are talking about your monitors for your 2488, the first thing I'd do is to consult the manual for proper placement of the monitors relative to the 2488. A quick rule of thumb is to place the monitors at ear level to the left and right of the 2488 so when you sit facing the 2488 yo will have one monitor facing each ear essentially. Again, consult your monitor manual as it will show the best placement and don't worry about electrical fields, etc. I have my monitors to the left and right of the 2488, the 2488 in the center and a 21" flat screen computer display in the center of all that with no problems whatsoever. That is the accepted practice generally speaking. Hope this helps.

Error 12 sys reset

Usually caused by a faulty or inadequate power supply failing to get the drive spinning up to the required speed.

I'd try replacing the power supply with one that matches the specs in the manual first to see if that fixes the problem.

If it doesn't you're looking at a possible hard drive reformat which will mean taking the drive out, hooking it up to a computer, reformating and then placing the drive back into the DP02.

Fortunately in most cases its a simple matter of replacing the power adapter.

Good lick.

Switching to movie mode automatically even when on camera setting

ok. I took off the 6 small screws holding it together, inspected it to see if it was anything obvious and easy and but no. I seen the small switch inside and figured it was at fault and needed to be replaced. (yeah right! like that could be done) then put it back together and so far the problem is gone. now i just have to wait and see if it stays that way. so far so good.

Hi,

You'd plug the XLR connection into any of the first four inputs on the 2488 (labelled a to d). This is a dynamic mic so you don't need phantom power and should make sure your phantom power switch is off (out) on the 2488. You'd then assign the input you've chosen to a track, arm the track for recording, turn up the input level for that input to test the signal level, and record away by pressing record and play together.

Hope this helps.

Tascam 2488 mk2

The only thing to try would be to locate the contrast knob next to the screen (near lower right of screen) and turn it to see if the picture gets better. I have the Mk1 which has a green screen, but I find that one is only visible when the contrast knob is pretty much exactly on center.

If that doesn't do it, I would begin to suspect a loose connection behind the LCD screen. You could probably remove the cover and locate the connector yourself, but depending on how old your 2488 is doing so might effect the warranty.

Cheers.

The only problems I've had with my 2488 thus far have been sticking buttons. It seems the transport buttons often go first. In my case it was a matter of dirt (or dust) getting in. The cat would come in from outside and walk on my 2488 with dirty paws. Shortly after that is when I started having problem with the buttons sticking. I my case I bought one of those spray cans of air for cleaning keyboards and blasted around the buttons with that. It seems to have fixed the problem for now. I leace a clear plastic bag over the unit now when not in use to protect it from dust (and cats).

Cheers,

Tracks 13/14 etc...

As far as I'm aware there is no way to record to just one of the stereo paired tracks (channels) on the 2488. There are individual mono tracks underneath those channels, but they are controlled with one fader and can only be recorded to in stereo. They are designed to be used for recording stereo sources and stereo bounces. You can however record to any of tracks 1 to 12 and then move (assign) that track to say track (channel) 13 or you can clone any single track to any other track (channel).

The term track can be misleading on the 2488. It might be easier to refer to the 1-24 fader controlled 'tracks' on the 2488 as 'channel strips' and refer to each of the 250 virtual 'tracks' on the 2488 as 'tracks'. You can assign any of the 250 virtual tracks on the 2488 to any of the channel strips. So you have 250 tracks available, but can only work with 24 of them at a time. The stereo pairs just offer some extra convenience when working in stereo. They allow you to control the volume of two tracks with one fader making working with stereo easier.

Channels 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 4 and 6, ...11 and 12 can also be linked as stereo pairs and will be controlled with the fader of the odd numbered (first) track when linked.

Cheers,

bd

In the monitor section on the 2488 console (upper right) make sure your monitoring source is set to 'stereo'. Then make sure your 'monitor level' control is turned up. The 'stereo' fader (sub mix fader on the MKI, stereo fader on the MKII).
