NVRAM is a generic term for Non-Volatile RAM. Meaning, RAM that does not loose its contents when it looses power. CMOS is not Non-Volatile. If you're CMOS battery dies and you shut off power, CMOS will loose its contents.
So you need to change your cmos cell also reset all settings to defaults.
There is not big issue with computer just pull cmos cell for 10 minutes from motherboard if your cmos cell is3 years old then change cmos cell.It is round cell on motherboard.
Also reattach the ram memory into it's slot on motherboard.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

So, I just recently purchased the Alienware Aurora computer, and everytime I have turned it on, it says Setup is preparing for first use. I have already updated everything for it. This morning when I...

Sounds like there's some corruption in the windows install. Did you purchase this computer new? if so I would call Dell cause it will surely be a warranty issue. If not you will need a Windows 7 install disc. If you have a disc put it in the disc drive and boot to it and do a repair on windows if this doesn't help you will need to completely reinstall windows 7. Hope this helps

Cannot seem to find how to enable the sata ports. I've tried all the solutions suggested with no good outcome.

With the SATA drive properly attached to the cable, try clearing the NVRAM (CMOS). By clearing the NVRAM (CMOS), the system will redetect all the installed hardware including your new drive. Just follow the procedure I have outlined below. After the clearing of the NVRAM (CMOS) you may get a warning at boot up about the Diskette Drive if you do not have a floppy drive installed in the system. If that happens, just go into the BIOS Setup and disable the option for the Diskette Drive. The error message will be gone on the next reboot.

  • Reboot system and enter the BIOS Setup by pressing F2.
  • Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and Num Lock.
  • Press ALT + E then ALT + F (should hear beep) then ALT + B
If you need any further assistance please feel free to contact me again.

Please rate me if this solution works for you

Thanks......Have a great time

After installing windows security updates, i could not get windows vista to come up and i don't have a recovery disk from Acer for my Acer Aspire T180 PC Desktop.

I run into this all the time, thank you microsoft!
First, shut it down and take a break, make sure you power the computer completely down to a cold boot. Walk away for ten, fifteen minutes.
Then when you come back boot into your setup (bios) screen, to do this is different for each manufacturer, some require you to hit del, some F2, some F10... when you get there Change your boot order to anything other than what it currently is, and save it. Reboot. let windows try to start. if it does, great! If not, reboot and Go BACK to the setup screen and change your boot order BACK to what you NEED/WANT it to be and save again and reboot. This SHOULD take you back to a windows startup of either a repair or safe startup screen. DO NOT REPAIR! Boot normally. The updates lost a startup configuration that is written INTERNALLY to windows. Since you altered the hardware configuration by changing the boot sequence around, windows had to rewrite this and away you go. On a laptop it gets a bit more confusing as you have to do this without the battery in place or it will continually write the data to the hard drive under the laptops auto powerdown/save features that a desktop does not have. NOTE: if this does not work any other bios change other than clock/calander will force this dmi configuration change. but typically the boot sequence is the safest to alter, as you do not risk messing up critical setting with this one.

How do I repair nvram ,, when I start windows XP it takes over 1/2 hour to load windows ,checking NVRAM this only started this week after a power cut

Sound like the battery for the bios has died, open up the case of you pc and you will see a silver battery to dissimilar to a watch battery remove this and go to your local hardware or PC retailer and get a replacement, first time you fit it you will still take a while to boot but them you should be ok, if not you possibly have a piece of failed hardware in your PC or corrupted BIOS, if this is the case you can download BIOS updates from the motherboard manufacturer, but to be honest if the BIOS is corrupt it's usually time for a new board or PC "Sorry"
