SOURCE: I have a 1965 0r 66 1020 3 cyl gas engine. It

I have a JD 3 cylinder gas 1520 that had a very similar sounding problem. Turned out to be a clogged fuel filter inside the connection of the fuel line to the carb. An old time JD mechanic fixed it for me the first time and I have since cleaned it again after a dry dusty mowing season. I hope this helps.

What is gap

Hi, Mike pertaining to engine spark plugs, "GAP" is the distance between the positive and negative electrodes at the base of the plug and is measured in thousands of an inch or mm by using a round pin gap gauge or flat blade feeler gauge. Every engine manufacturer has a specific design-size-heat range- gapped spark plug. Gaps will vary depending on engine brand. Gap is also referred to in engines using a mechanical "POINTS" ignition system instead of electronic ignition (what is the points gap) for more information about your question and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please visit the websites below. Spark Plug Gap is .032 inch. Many have started using .035 as it is easier to set using most newer tools.

Point Gap is .016 inch. You may also set point gap by using a dwell meter if you have one. That setting would be 32 degrees.

Point gap 66 dodge 383

Considering its power and fuel economy, I'd go w the std plug gap is .035" to start & maybe experiment w .040". The std point gap is .016" & you might experiment w tightening that up a bit which will increase your dwell (more coil saturation time & a hotter spark) at the expense of shorter point life because they are closed longer & current is flowing thru them for a longer period of time but you are switching over soon. that might give you more gain than diff plug gaps.

timing aligned there. If not, vary the gap
slightly.
