What is this on my gutter and downspout?

We were looking at a house today and found this thing attached to the downspout but sticking up above the gutter, it has wires running to it from somewhere inside the house. Is it maybe a remote temperature sensor? If so, I have never seen anything like it. Any ideas?

Well..since it's on the downspout, I'd imagine it's some sort of rain gauge or measurement item..can't be very heavy, otherwise the spout would break, and the spider would never be able to go up or down, right?

What does it happen when my gutters get clogged up?

Hey Mark,
Thanks a great questions I have been asked many times by other fellow Australians. So here's the deal.

Clogged gutters are among the prime reasons for fires in both the residential and commercial real estate sector. Bush fires are a common and disastrous events in places like Australia where the climate is harsh. Even in Sydney, one of the most populated cities in the country, the temperature often exceeds the bearable maximum and the air humidity is at its lowest. Despite being a coastal city, it's a region where bush fires can occur and homeowners need to be aware of the techniques that must be applied during the seasonal temperature peaks.

Reducing the dry vegetation around the property is an essential part of preventing any bush fire. Yet, there are many flammable materials and items which can be found outdoors and the clogged gutters are one of them.To prevent an unexpected ignition, homeowners should always keep their gutters dirt and grime-free.

While it is recommended that the removal of leafs and dirt should be done by a professional gutter cleaning team, homeowners can do still do it themselves while following the local regulations. In Sydney, for example, there are specific rules for water use in Sydney and working from heights should be complied with the state's requirements. In severe situations with a high risks of a fire, gutters must be filled with water to provide additional security for the building.

Keypoints
Here are the prime reasons you should take care of your gutters:
  • to prevent water damage
  • to prevent fire harardz
  • to prevent pest infestations

Gutter attachment for leaf blower

Would that work for seamless gutter? We are going to replace ours and we had been looking into getting the seamless kind cause they looked fairly easy to deal with. It would be awesome if that leaf blower attachment worked for our gutters. http://www.thompsonheatingcooling.net/Seamless-Gutters

I need someone to come out and check my gutters. I think something might be rotting up there. I live in Denver.

Here is a company I found on Yelp with good ratings. They should be able to come out to your house and check out your gutters.

Can I extend the length of the blower tube on my 125BT blower?

I tried that (once). Used ABS plastic from Lowes to make a custom gutter cleaner, attached to a big ECHO back-pack leaf blower. Several problems: 1) Pipe is heavy, so put a couple of 90 degree elbows on the end to "hook" onto the gutter. 2) Need to wear a rain suit, because of the NASTY decomposed leaves raining down. 3) The air tended to lift the shingles (very bad). I only tried it once and don't recommend trying it. The same idea with a garden hose may work better? Eventually, leaf guards were installed with limited success.

What are the best gutter guards?

Easy Flow Gutter Guards are the only gutter guard in the world that can be attached to an existing 5k or 6k gutter system (This is the continuous aluminum gutter system most used in America today) without compromising the integrity of the roof. Easy Flow Gutter Guards attach under the flashing on the fascia boards, protecting the fascia from all contact with rain or other forms of moisture.

Im trying to take my talkabout distance and i cant figure out how to take it apart. i think it may be the distance dps, but im not sure.

Note: This job is made much easier if you have a frame removal tool.

1) Carefully remove battery tray from radio. Be careful not to disturb or break the mylar ribbon on the back of the tray, and do not disturb the solder contacts, as these trays are no longer available.
2) Look inside the radio where you just removed the battery tray. You will find the housing has a channel or gutter running up both sides. At the top of the gutter is the place we are looking for, a plastic latch or ear.
3) Using a frame removal tool, or if needed two small screw drivers, slide them up the gutter on the inside of the housing on the right and left, until you reach the small ears. The frame removal tool will lift these ears and release the guts of the radio from the chassis.
4) Once released, carefully slide the component board up and out of the housing. The top plate will remain attached to the component board. This step is tricky, as it is easy to rip components off the component board when sliding in or out of the housing.

FYI: Flat rate repair is usually available at facilities servicing the TalkAbout Distance and Distance DPS for a current rate of $69 ea.

Best regards.

What is the best humidity setting for a four foot high crawl space?

Depends on the cubic footage (length x width x height = cubic footage) and how damp it is. If you're not going to have to dump the collection tank (a drain hose is connected to the unit to run water out of the craw space and away from the house), I would run it on high for 24 hours and then lower it to medium for several days. After that, you should have a pretty good indication what it takes to keep the craw space dry. At least, until the next heavy, continuous rain storm.

If this is an on going problem, I'm not sure that a humidifier is the total answer. You need to look at the causes for this moisture (i.e) Are the downspouts carrying the water away from the house? Are the gutters and downspouts clogged with debris, causing the gutters to overflow? Does the earth around the foundation need to be regraded, so that water runs away from the foundation? Has the moisture barrier on the outside, underground around the foundation failed? Would installing an automatic sump pump in the crawl space be more efficient?

So, in addition to the dehumidifier, you need to look at the big picture and eliminate the cause(s).

Hope this helps to solve your problems.

My downspout gutter has become detached. How can i use gutter tape? Thanks, Barbara

Tape is difficult to use in this case and will not last long against water. Push the gutter sections back together and screw together with 2 short sheet metal screws at each joint
