Question about GE Monogram Side by Side Refrigerator

Open Question

I have a GE Monogram refrigerator is overheating

I have a GE Monogram, side-by-side refridgerator, model ZISW42DSB. Problems with overheating. Fridge and freezer still works, but the middle section between the fridge and freezed has become so hot to the touch, you can't put your hand on it. Any ideas what's causing the heating?

I have the same overheating problem with my GE Monogram side by side built in fridge, in fact, my freezer isn't even freezing things anymore because the inner middle wall is so hot. The part number you mention doesn't turn up in any searches. When I look at inner back wall of fridge, there are two lights and a small coil to the left of them, but I don't see a green band, can you describe more please. Thanks so much.

SOURCE: refrigerator not cooling

see if the compressor motor is running

The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help.

If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

  • The compressor

  • The Thermostat

  • The overload, relay, or capacitor

  • The defrost timer

  • The condenser fan motor

SOURCE: Refrigerator warm, freezer too cold

I had this same problem. You need to totally empty the fridge and freezer and allow it to defrost for 24 hours. Then put it back on and it will work. This happens if someone leaves the freezer door open and then it gets closed. The defrosted water freezes in the pipes and doesn't allow the cold air to move up into the fridge so the freezer gets even colder. This has happened to me twice!

SOURCE: Kenmore 5126101 middle separator b/t fridge/freezer extremely hot

There are 2 or 3 things that would cause this. first make sure the condenser coils are not plugged with dust (vacumn or blow them out) next check to make sure the fan that cools these coils is running, (this is the most likely problem). if both of these check out ok then you would need to check to make sure your interior lights ar going off when the doors are closed as these will add extra heat and cause the center rails to run hot. last and most uncommon would be a freon system problem.

fyi there is a hot gas freon line that runs in between the doors to prevent exterior sweating. when poor or no air flow problems for the condenser coil exist it causes this area to become hotter.
One more thing. if you do determine that the condenser fan motor is bad you can put a normal house fan blowing on to the coil to help cool this area down until you can get the unit repaired.
If you need any further assistance leave me a comment here and I'll gladly get back to you. Thanks Peyton

Ge monogram zfsb23d howls

Usually you will get a sort of whinning/screeching noise from the fans inside the fridge/frezzer when they are not working properly but you can also get that howling noise from the fan which cools the compressor for the fridge/frezzer which is usually found underneath the Unit. All you have to do is find exactly where the noise is coming from and remember unless you have a dog that likes to lock itself in the fridge for a joke then most noises that come from fridge/frezzers are only made from the moving mechanical parts and sometimes leaking refridgerants but not often.
