What is best free program that can be installed on a pc (not a boot disc or iso file to be burned to a cd!) that will display for me all the IE passwords/firefox passwords that were used on my laptop (cannot remember some of my gmail passwords, etc, please do not suggest I recover using test question/answer!) Some times when windows asked do I want to remember password, I selected 'no'.

You don't need any program in Firefox. It's built in. Just Pull down TOOLS > Options > click Security > and click "Saved Passwords"; Then choose the option to show your passwords.

As for IE, I don't use it myself, because I think it's a pretty poor browser. But this product looks like it would do the trick -

Unless IE8 is dramatically different, you don't need to buy a password viewer to see passwords in IE either though, you just need something that can view your Internet cache. (Like maybe Ultra-edit.)

    1. WinCap is a management tool, its install doesn't matter in terms of password recovery.

    2. If Firefox doesn't have your password under "tools > passwords" than it doesn't have your passwords anywhere. This option literally views the cached data, so if you don't see it, it isn't there.

    3. As for Internet Explorer. There is no product that is both free and easy to use other than what's been listed.Even experts can't provide for you something that doesn't exist.
As a separate note, if you lost your password cache as a result of the profile being changed or deleted your password cache for both IE and Firefox are COMPLETELY gone and unrecoverable without restoring the old profile data.

Recreating a profile literally creates a new file on the drive.

Hello and welcome to FixYa.
I've personally used Cain & able for this task many times in the past, it should work.

http://www.oxid.it/cain.html

Note that firefox, if you save a password, it will be readable from firefox settings saved passwords.

cain and able will be able to dig up any passwords that may have been accidentally stored. But you can not obtain all passwords that have been used. To be able to do so, you would have had to have a key logging software installed on the computer that would record every key press.

Since you do not have such a program installed and I do not recommend you to do so. Then what cain finds, is all that your going to get.

Also note that cain is considered a hack tool, and may come up as a virus / trojan / hacktool from your antivirus software. My avast does not complain about this but some other antivirus programs may complain.

  • Ekse Apr 23, 2010

Open the program. you should be on the decoders page.

The program has many other features that we do not need. for password recovery we will only use the following: see picture:

  • Ekse Apr 23, 2010

note that if a password is not stored on the computer, there is no way to get it with a magical program.

a password has to be saved on to the computer for you to somehow get it.

  • Ekse Apr 23, 2010

winPcap has noting to do with password recovery, it is used by some of the other features on the program. which we don't need.

Access the Internet from another computer that has a CD burner installed. If you have other user accounts on the main computer, you can attempt to log in to those accounts just to get to the Internet.
    • 2

Download Ophcrack, a highly rated free password cracker for Windows. The website has been included in the References section at the end of this article. For easy access, download the file to the computer's Desktop. You will be downloading the ISO image of the program which can be burned onto a blank CD-R.
    • 3

Insert the blank CD-R CD. Select the ISO image of Ophcrack that you just downloaded, and right click on the item. Select 'Burn' from the drop down menu. If a burn program opens, click Burn Disc to burn the program to the CD-R.
    • 4

Remove the burned disc, and go back to the original computer that you are locked out of. Turn on the computer, and immediately insert the disc into the CD-ROM drive.
This will allow the computer to boot from the CD-ROM. You may be prompted in DOS to boot from the CD-ROM, select "Yes."
    • 5

Allow Ophcrack to run; it will run automatically and display the administrator and user password on the screen as it recovers them. Write down the passwords, and wait for the program to finish.
    • 6

Remove the burned disc, and restart the computer. Allow the computer to load to the sign in screen, and enter the newly recovered password. You should have full access to your Administrator account once again.

What's the difference between burning a cd and burning an image

Burning an image file (ISO) means that you will burn and finalize the disc. The ISO file includes a "boot sector". This will create a disc that can be used as a boot CD. Make sure that the ISO is <700 MB if you burn to CD; if it is larger, use a DVD or DVD DL. Some image files may have an IMG file type (this was the file type for bootable floppies). Unless the file is an ISO or IMG, the burn image function will not work. You will need to use another program to make an image file first. You may need to use a bootable disc to get the information for the boot sector.

Burning a CD creates a data CD which may or may not be finalized, depending on your settings.

I hope this helps.

EMACHINE HAVE AN UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME. HOW CAN I FIX THIS PROBLEM?

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html)

Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, itll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.

If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

You could also try a Live Linux like Knoppix Live from here:- http://www.knoppix.net/get.php,
download the Free ISO using a Torrent, burn it to a CD then run that it will load into Ram and then ith all the software in the CD you can examine the hard drive

hope this helps

I forgot my passsword to my computer

Goto here and read about Ophcrack you don't need to get in to Windows to remove a password.

You burn Ophcrack iso to a cd and then boot from it. Read it all and you can do it yourself if you have a friend with a pc/laptop to download the iso and burn the disk.

The best program to burn it with is imgburn and it's completely free.

You simply install imgburn, start it, click Write Image File To Disk, browse to the ophcrack iso file you downloaded, put a blank CD in the drive and click the file to disk icon at the bottom to burn it.

When it's finished just put it in your laptop drive and boot from it.

I have downloaded the ISO file but not sure how to use it to install the windows 7 which is an upgrade version Many thanks

An ISO file is a CD or DVD image. You burn a disc with this image using a program like CDBurnerXP (a good, free program which is the one I use), or Nero or Roxio which often come preloaded on a system.

If the system has been set up correctly, ISO files should start the burner program for you when you double-click on one. Then you just need to have a disc in the burner and off it goes. Otherwise, you need to start the burning program manually and select the "burn an image" option. Specify the ISO file when you are asked for the image to burn. Do burn an ISO file to a disc using the "create a data disc" option. People often do this and then wonder why the result isn't correct.

Once you converted the ISO image to a real disc, you can either keep it or delete it.

I am trying to write to a CD on my Lenovo X61. I

Here's How:
  1. Download Free Easy CD DVD Burner and follow the on-screen directions to install the software.
Note: Free Easy CD DVD Burner is completely free and fully functional. However, there are some accompanying programs that it asks you to install - feel free to decline those if you're not interested. Free Easy CD DVD Burner supports Windows 7, Vista, XP, and 2000.
  2. Insert a blank CD or DVD in your drive.
  3. Open the Free Easy CD DVD Burner program.
  4. Click on the Copy CD/DVD button on the tool bar at the top of the program window.
  5. Under the Action menu on the left, click the Burn an image file link.
  6. When the Select the image file that you want to burn window opens, locate and select the ISO file you wish to burn to the empty disc and then click Open.
  7. A dialog box will appear asking "Do you want to burn [your chosen ISO file]?".
    Click OK to confirm.
The burning process will automatically begin. The time it takes to burn will depend on the size of the ISO file and the speed of both your PC and your CD or DVD burner.
  8. When the burning is complete, the CD or DVD will automatically eject from the drive. You can remove the disc and close Free Easy CD DVD Burner.
  9. If you view the contents of the disc, you might notice many files and folders. So what happened to the ISO file? Remember that the ISO file is just an image of what should be on the CD or DVD. That ISO file contained the information for all of the files you see on the disc.
Tips:
  1. You must have a CD or DVD burner to write ISO files to CDs or DVDs. You will not be able to burn ISO files if you only have a standard CD or DVD drive.
  2. Many ISO files, like some memory testing programs and password recovery tools, are intended to be booted from after they are burned.
