Natural body oil, dirt, etc. from your finger will sometimes get gunked up under the trackball and cause this problem. Take it to a local authorized Verizon service dealer for cleaning or you can do it yourself which is what I've learned to do. The silver ring around the trackball has to GENTLY be pried off, GENTLY clean the area where the trackball sits as well as the trackball itself with a q-tip moistened with alcohol, allow to dry for approx 45 secs, replace trackball and silver ring. Works for me!

Blackberry curve won't turn on...

Wipe it to start over. Sometimes when you change or add something like a THEME or a download it HOSES the BB completely. So delete what was on there and don't download a theme or any other wacky add-on.

To Sanitize or Clear out all the information in a Blackberry Device
Scroll to select the OPTIONS icon and press [Trackwheel] to select.
Scroll to select SECURITY and press [Trackwheel] to select.
On some units you may have to select GENERAL SETTINGS before getting the next menu.
Press [Trackwheel] again to access the Menu screen for the security.
Scroll to select the WIPE HANDHELD and press [Trackwheel] to select.
Scroll UP to select CONTINUE and press [Trackwheel] to select.
Type blackberry on keyboard to confirm the action press <-| key.
System responds with ERASING INFORMATION.

How do I stop my Blackberry going on to standby

I don't know what you are referring to when you say STANDBY option, so I'll include what I know about the password option. Maybe you mean SECURITY TIMEOUT, or maybe your version calls it standby time..

Setting up a password for the device:
Scroll to select the SETTINGS/OPTIONS icon and press [Trackwheel] to select.
Scroll to select SECURITY OPTIONS and press [Trackwheel] to select.
Scroll to select GENERAL SETTINGS before getting the next menu.
Scroll to select the PASSWORD It should say ENABLED.
For most people the security timeout is set to 1 HOUR.

Setting up the time it takes for the BB to require a password:
Select the line you need to change, and Press [Trackwheel] to access the Menu
CHANGE OPTION should be highlighted Press [Trackwheel] to select.
Scroll UP to select ENABLED and press [Trackwheel] to select.
Scroll to select the SAVE and press [Trackwheel] to select.
System responds with NEW PASSWORD: input your new password press the <-| key.
System will ask you to re-enter your NEW PASSWORD: input your new password again and press <-| key.

About fixed dialing
If you enable fixed dialing number (FDN) mode, your device only makes calls to contacts on your FDN list. Your device can dial emergency numbers in FDN mode, even if the numbers are not in the FDN list. If your service provider plan includes SMS, you can also send SMS messages to contacts on your FDN list

so if you have this enabled chances are you have to turn it off.
this is how you turn it on so you should be able to use it as a guide to turn it off.

Turn on fixed dialing
1. In the phone options, click FDN Phone List.
2. Click the trackwheel.
3. Click Enable FDN mode.
4. Type the PIN2 code provided by your service provider.
5. Click the trackwheel.

or if you wanna keep it on and add friends to the fdn

Add contacts to the FDN list
1. In the phone options, click FDN Phone List.
2. Click the trackwheel.
3. Click New.
4. Type the PIN2 code provided by your service provider.
5. Click the trackwheel.
6. Type a name and a phone number.
7. Click the trackwheel.
8. Click Save.

and finally some shortcut keys:
To open the phone, press the Send key.
To end a call, press the End key.
To call a selected contact or phone number, press the Send key. To call a speed dial number, hold the assigned key.
To add an extension to a phone number, press the X key. Type the extension number.
To call your voice mail access number, hold 1.
To type a letter in a number field, hold the Alt key.

I need help with volume

You may have selected a profile that does not alert you audibly when you receive messages. You may select a different profile, edit the current profile or create a completely new profile. I'm attaching instructions for creating a profile and editing would be similar except you would select a profile then select "edit" for the menu. Be use you have "tone" or "vibrate and tone" selected and that the volume is not on mute. Always save your changes.

Create notification profiles
1.In the profiles list, click the trackwheel.
2.Click New Profile.
3.Type a name for the profile.
4.Click an item.
5.Click Edit.
6.Set how you want to receive notification for that item.
7.Click the trackwheel.
8.Click Save.
9.Click the trackwheel.
10.Click Save.

To turn on tones when pressing the keys, follow the following instructions:

Turn on tones when pressing keys
In the device options, click Screen/Keyboard. Set the Key Tone field to On. Click the trackwheel. Click Save.
