Question about Denon DRA-397

2 Answers

I was told that a Denon DRA-397 receiver would accomodate my new Bose 901s, but I haven't had any success in connecting my Bose amplifier to the receiver. How does the amplifier connect to the receiver. I also have a Denon Ipod dock connected to the receiver.

The problem I have is that there is only one CDR/TAPE in and one CDR/TAPE out connection in the back of the receiver, and the Ipod dock uses the CDR/TAPE in conncection. The Ipod works normally this way. However, that leaves me with only a CDR/TAPE out connection for the Bose amplifier. Does this mean that I can either listen to my ipod without the Bose amplifier or listen to something else with the amplifier?

Hello,

since your receiver has only one input and output, I believe your Bose amplifier should have more then one input. So I would suggest you do it this way:

  1. Check the back of your Bose amplifier, there should be an output there. Connect the output from your Bose amplifier, to the input of your receiver.
  2. Then connect your I-pod duck and other devices into the IN of your Bose Amplifier.
By so doing, you Bose amplifier, will be the main source for listening to your sounds.

I hope you understand my message.

Good luck.

How do I hook up my bose 901s to this unit?

Well the basic connection of the speakers would be the same as another stereo speaker pair. Wire the left and right speakers to the L/R Front Surround speakers on the Denon.

With the 901's I am assuming that there is an external equalizer supplied by Bose. Typically this EQ is installed in a tape loop on the receiver/amp so that it is ahead of the power amplifier that drives the speakers. This EQ needs to be there to attempt to get reasonable frequency response from a speaker that has only 4" drivers. I'm not sure I see any reasonable way to make the EQ work with the Denon AV receiver. You'd likely be better off using the Bose speakers in a dedicated 2-channel stereo and getting a set of speakers for the AV usage.

zone 2 is just for an extra set of speakers in another location, your sub is not attatched to that zone

Zone 2

I would consult your owner's manual but I don't think you can adjust the bass/treble levels on the zone 2 outputs.

If you are not pressing the power button on the remote that may be the problem

Dra-397 shuts down 1 second after turning on

There's a couple of possibilities; power supply shutting down because of a fault within it; the PS shutting down because of excessive current drawn and that can be caused by a failure in the final amplifiers which are probably modular in design.

Denon dra 397 shuts done if I turn on both zone a & b. Have a 100 watt volume control on each pair of speakers. Works fine with only zone a or zone b on, but not both.

Let's understand this - you have an external volume control wired in series with each front speaker set?

Can you elaborate on their electrical characteristics?

Denon receiver (DRA 397) will not speak to iPod dock

IF YOUR NOT USING A DENON IPOD DOCKING STATION IT WILL NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY.
YOU CAN CONNCET OTHER TYPES OF IPOD DOCKING STATIONS BUT YOU WILL NOT HAVE CONTROL THROUGH THE DENON AND ONLY CONNECT THE AUDIO FOR THAT DOCKING STATION TO THE DENON AS ANOTHER SOURCE INPUT
