Two possibilities here. The lens housing is damage, and when you try to zoom it is unable to do so. You would be more inclined to get a message about this as opposed to the camera powering down.
Second option is a low power situation. If you are using non rechargeable batteries, you might find they are not up to the task. I have found this with few cameras. If you are using rechargeable batteries, they may be end of life, and no longer packing the same punch that the once were.
Although rechargeable batteries have 1.2 volts instead of 1.5, they can have more power with higher capacity. I tend to use 18mAh or higher batteries in my camera, especially for zooming, but make sure to use the guidelines for charging and recharging these so they will last a long time.

My Kodak EasyShare M320 camera works fine except for the fact that everytime I try and zoom in, the camera shuts off. I'll charge it and the problem still doesnt resolve itself.

sounds like the zoom motor is shot. to prevent further damage, the unit shuts off when the power goes to the motor but the motor doesn't move. if power kept going it would overheat and melt inside if was allowed to get hot enough. it could be the motor is stuck but either way i think you may need to take it in to a repair shop. if still under warranty, i would take it back.
hope this helps

The camera turns off everytime I use the zoom button

Battery power could be getting low, and the camera shuts off because there is too much of a load on the camera when the zoom gear is operated.

Zoom error

worked on allot of fuji's. first detease, a gear is slipping in the lens retract assembly due to a crack or wear or jam

2nd guest .. zoom errors means its really stuck tight

the gears can be ordered and replaced and one more possibility is that the motor that drives the gear is bad
Also if dropped or zoom lens jammed hard... lens assembly needs total realignment or replacing..

Hey bello205,
This camera does not allow the user to actually turn off the optical zoom, but does allow the user to shut off the digital zoom. If you are talking about the digital zoom make sure it is turned on in through the menu system. As far as the optical zoom goes make sure you are not in playback mode. If this doesn't work you can try having the camera reset to the original settings every time you shut off the camera by choosing this option under the setup menu in playback mode. If none of this works have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician.

Go Ahead. Use Us.
