I just put the mower deck back on my 18 HP 42" craftsman tractor & the blades won't engage. The belt is not spinning.

The belt is not old or worn & it's around all 3 pulleys. I've lowered the blade to it's lowest level & it still does not engage.

Hello
There should be 3 pulleys for the blade belt. Two on the deck and one on the engine.

Is the belt on all 3 pulleys? Also is the belt worn or old?
Check your engage lever and be sure its dropping the deck down far enough to put pressure on the blade drive belt.

The blades do not spin when put into gear

Look to see if the belt has come off the deck. Also, does the handle that engages the blades have tension on it or is it loose?

My craftsman 18.0 42" lawn

First check to make sure you can turn each blade by hand, with the mower off. If neither blade spindle is frozen remove the deck and make sure all the pulleys move freely and function like they should. The cable should have been operating a spring loaded pulley arm that applied tension to the deck belt to make the blades function. Some times build up with block that from moving or rust will make it stick.

Craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut

It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps
