Question about Frigidaire 13.7 cu. ft. / 388 liter Upright Freezer FFU14FC6C

1 Answer

Freezer seems to be partitioned. The bottom part will freeze water but the top portion will not! Seems to work well after it has been unplugged for awhile and allowed to defrost. But , the vent for both top and bottom do not appear to be bocked by the formation of ice. The vaccum seal works initially after being shutdown, but the it does not work and thus the freezer doesn't freeze!

It sounds like you have a failure of the automatic defrost system. This system has 3 components

- timer, this device provides power to the compressor for cooling then changes to the defrost mode every 8 - 10 hours and provides power for the heater

- heater, this is located just below the evaporator and clears the frost from the coils

- terminator, this device turns the defrost cycle off and prevents over heating during the defrost cycle.

To test the components locate the timer, it is usually on the back or in front behind the kick panel; it looks like this
Freezer seems to be partitioned. The bottom part - 0fc8e4f.jpg

The white piece can be turned either by hand or a flat blade screwdriver, turn it clockwise slowly until a positive 'click' is heard. Once you hear this stop and wait, you will be in the defrost cycle, if you open the door after about 5 minutes you should hear the water sizzling on the heater faintly behind the back panel inside the freezer. If you do hear that then the heater and terminator are okay and you need to replace the timer.

If you do not get heat you will need to unload the freezer, and remove the back panel. Behind there is the evaporator and below that is the heater. You will have to test the heater with an ohm meter it should read under 100 ohms.

The terminator is clipped to the top of the evaporator and should read 0 ohms when it is cold.

Why isnt the top part of my Daewoo FRS-U20BG larder fridge/freezer working although rest of freezer seems ok?

Is it just the freezer section? Open the freezer door for a minute and then, without shutting it, press the button on the inside that makes the light go out. The fan at the back at the top of the freezer should start whirring. This circulates the freezing air. If it doesn't start then that's your problem as the freezing air isn't getting to the top of the freezer. It's simple enough to replace. Buy a new part (30 pounds?) and replace from the inside by removing the back panels to the freezer. Turn the freezer off and unplug first though, obviously! Hope this helps.

Ice in bottom of upright freezer -- problem with tube position?

Hello, get a short piece of electrical wire and strip the insulation off. put a bend in one end and then hang it over the heater directly above the drain making sure the wire runs into the drain about an inch. the heat from the heater will make sure the drain stays clear. Hope this helps. Mike

GE upright freezer

If this is a frost free model the fan could be bad. If not frost free it is probably low on freon. I don't recomment fixing this as you can never really trust the freezer again. Most of the time the leak can't be found and adding freon is only a temp solution.

Not freezing equally

Look for frost build up on back wall at bottom the auto defrost may be out. Check if the evaporator fan is blowing. If not it's stuck by something or needs replaced. If not The sealed system may have a leak or restiction causing it to only work closest to the evaporator i.e. the lower shelf.

AS A FRIDGE ENGINEER I HAVE COME ACROSS THIS PROBLEM BEFORE IT COULD BE A LOSS OF REFRIGERANT ALTHOUGH THIS WOULD STEADILY WORSEN IN USE,MORE LIKELY THERE IS A BLOCKAGE IN THE SYSTEM STOPPING THE REFRIGERANT REACHING ALL THE PIPEWORK THE CHEAPER FREEZERS USE THE SHELFS AS PART OF THE FREEZING SYSTEM.
THE ONLY SOLUTION IS A COMPRESSOR CHANGE AND REGAS (COSTLY IF NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY/GUARANTEE ETC)

IF FREEZER IS MORE THAN 5 YRS OLD BEST TO SCRAP IT UNFORTUNATELY..
