Question about Dell 1700n Laser Printer

1 Answer

My printer is leaving toner "tire marks" up and down the right and left side of the page margin as well as spilling uneven blotches of toner along the right side of the paper.

I have followed the (minimal) instructions in the Dell 1700N manual. There is really nothing about regular cleaning or maintenance in the one I located on Dell's website.

I did what I normally do when cleaning a printer, but it seems there is a roller I am missing somewhere as the tire tracks remain.

Your printer needs cleaning. Consult your printer manual on how to clean it. If you do not have the manual, you can usually download it from the printer manufacturer's website.

If it were me, I'd probably have it cleaned professionally if you don't want to void the warranty. Some of the parts are probably not serviceable.

Having said that, I came across an article with a lot of good advice for cleaning the rollers on laser printers. This fellow obviously knows what he's doing in this area. Complete with cleaning and health and safety tips:

Prints blotches and marks down the left edge

Hi
That sounds like classic wear and tear issues. All those rollers and gears have very close tolerances and any variation out of the rang and the paper grabing and jamming starts. And that could be cause of the toner leaking. You must have a lot of miles on that ol girl and you got your moneys worth out of her. They dont make them like that anymore and I dont think you could find the parts even though that was back when they supplied parts. I asked an engineer once "couldn't they make that one gear out of metal like the rest of them?" He replied "well sure, but there wouldn't be any money in that..." You beat the system on that one. Time to start your research on a replacement I'm afraid.

Toner blotched on printed material When printing

If the line has a 1/8" white margin on either side, clean your glass and mirrors.

If the line is all the way across your page, consult your users manual for cleaning the sawtooth electrode (open the front door and take out your waste tank, there is a green rod on each drum cartridge you can pull and hear a zipping noise) and cleaning the laser lens (there should be a cleaning wand under your waste tank, turn pad side down and insert in the gap underneath your drum cartridge)

Print from my samsung printer ML 1610 is faint ,particularly on right margin side. This problem has arisen after toner refilling.please advice me what is to be done to correct this problem

Take the toner cartridge out and hold it in front of you with your left and right hands on the left and right ends of the toner cartridge. Then shake it back and forth until the toner is evenly distributed inside, without spilling the toner on the floor.

Toner problems with Konica Minolta 2450

very annoying message i agree - most likely caused by toner dust.

The printer uses a carousel to rotate the toner cartridges. Dust and toner can easily spill as the cartridges rotate. The error can appear at any time but seems to be most annoying after a paper jam or other error. It is also important to make sure that the cartridges themselves are clear of toner dust. Pay particulair attention to any copper contacts on the cartridge.

My printer leaves black marks down the right side of my documents on every page. I have changed the toner but that does not help. Can I clean the drum?

It may need general cleaning OR have toner stuck to the fuser roller.

Be very careful of the ionizing wires... they are fragile in laser printers.

Marks on printed sheet

Toner powder is so fine that it hides under parts that you can't see. By all means, DO NOT blow it out with canned air! Get a vacuum with a fine filter that can hold toner and remove the toner cartridge. Then vacuum out the inside of the printer as thoroughly as possible. Especially clean out along the paper path and where the cartridge goes in. It may still print a few dirty pages, but after several pages, it should go away.

Does not print on right 1/4 inch of page

Try cleaning the laser lens cover - a 4" x 1/2" glass surface down inside at the front - you need to take out the bit with the green handle to see it. A soft cloth used gently should do it fine.

You would be advised to gently remove as much of the toner dust as you can, but be gentle and follow the cleaning instructions in the manual.
