The monitor needs to be identified for the resolution to be known to the system, otherwise default limits will apply.
For some monitors 'drivers' are available that provide that info together with a color profile.
But best check the specifications of the monitor in the manual of on the web (based on model #).
If you use too high a resolution of refresh rate you can really harm the monitor...
