I have tried 2 brand new ribbon / paper sets and have installed many cartridges on this printer and have already got the manual, could it be a problem with the sensor that checks ribbon? and if so where is the sensor?

  • billy860 Apr 23, 2010

I have followed instructions to the letter many times but with same result do you know what sensor sends this message to display?

Re- "Have you tried to Replace the Ribbon and Paper? " answer Yes 2 new ribbons, 2 new papers.

Re- "Ribbon must be Compatible and of Appropriate Size. It should not be loose.", answer I have always used Sony media and the appropriate size. It fits in the same as it has always done.

Re- "This message would Appear until Door is Open. Once you Replace the Ribbon and close the door, the message would disappear.", answer The message appears after the "initialize" is displayed, and when door is open message appears "Door is open" when closed with new ribbon inserted it returns to "Initialize" then "Check Ribbon".

Re- "Unplug the Printer for Few Minutes", answer I have done this many times.

Re-"There was an Upgrade that was done for the software. If you have not Upgraded the software, this message would be there. Upgrade the Software and the message would disappear.
", answer The problem is not a software based issue, the printer itself is the problem. Regardless of connectivity to the PC still get same message but to answer your question I have the latest driver from Sony and the firmware is ver 3.02.

I would like to know what/where the sensor that sends this message to display in case it may need cleaned or replaced.

IF you have replaced the "Ribbon" and the "Fault" message, is still showing, then, I would suspect, that the "Sensor" that "Tells" the "Brain" in the printer, that, that part is "Faulty". So indeed it may be the sensor, that's actually the problem, and not the actual ribbon, that's of course, if you installed it correctly? You need to check, that it wasn't damaged when replacing it. IF all is OK, then it's either the "Brain" or a "Sensor" . You may find, that you have to replace the Main board, to clear this fault condition.

I can help you with this problem. There is a very small sensor that detects that the ribbon is there. Remove the ribbon and look for this sensor and then re-install the ribbon again being sure that the ribbon runs across this sensor. Shut printer off by unplugging it for about 5 minutes. Then power the printer back on. What should happen is the ribbon will be detected and start working normally again. Please let me know if you need more info.

Hi,

Have you tried to Replace the Ribbon and Paper? Make sure the Ribbon must be Compatible and of Appropriate Size. It should not be loose. This message would Appear until Door is Open. Once you Replace the Ribbon and close the door, the message would disappear.

If not, Unplug the Printer for Few Minutes, say 15 minutes and then Turn it ON. That would Reset it.

Note - There was an Upgrade that was done for the software. If you have not Upgraded the software, this message would be there. Upgrade the Software and the message would disappear.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Hi,

Thanks for using Fixya.

Please update your printer software before trying to follow any of these steps
After updating your printer's software, follow these steps:-
(i) Turn off the printer.

(ii) Turn on the printer.

(iii) If the error message is still not resolved, remove the print cartridge .

(iv) Look to see if the ribbon is jammed inside the print cartridge.

(v) If the ribbon is loose, rotate the print cartridge spool counter clockwise to take up the slack.

(vi) Reinsert the print cartridge.

If these steps do not solve our problem, you will need to get it repaired at any Sony service centre.
Good Luck and have nice day.

The 3 issues that I have seen with the Sony printers are as follows.
From most common to least.

1. The ribbon is used up, and many times the user has another pack and doesnt realize the ribbon that was in the other pack was also used. A new needs to be purchased.

2. The ribbon is not made for that printer.

3. The sensor in the unit does not recognize the ribbon and it needs to be served. You may want to try blowing some air (not directly with an air can) to see if that might help. Otherwise , the unit will need to be serviced.

thank you

The black spool of the ribbon has a built in chip, If that chip is damaged it renders the ribbon unuseable. Try redownloading the printer driver, Click on the link below and select your operating system to download.

I have a Tally 6212. I'm using non Tally ribbons which is producing a ribbon fault. I'm told by my ribbon supplier that there is an override to keep the ribbon from causing the fault. Can you...

If the ribbon is causing the Ribbon Fault, they would not be very well made compatables I would suggest changing to one of the other brands available. I belive the T6215 senses the ribbon turning by having a silver strip stuck on a rotating disk on the back of the ribbon, if this strip is not present or is not being detected it will display a Ribbon Fault. You can check the ribbon to ensure it has a reflective strip by manually winding the ribbon and looking at the back side of the ribbon, you should see a rotating disk which is half silver and half black. If this disk is not present the compatable ribbons would not be that compatable. The T6215 does to have a fault over ride for the Ribbon Sensor on its own, you can only over ride all faults this may cause other problems as Paper Out, Paper Motion errors are also overridden. You can enable fault override in the following way; Press and hold down LINE FEED and ENTER for about 5 seconds untill the printer bleeps. Press and Hold down FORM FEED and ENTER for about 5 seconds untill the printer bleeps. The above actions enabls Fault Over rides temporarily if the printer is powered off or reset Thai setting will be lost.

Ink ribbon or paper roll error. the in ribbon is broken, or the paper roll is jammed. Clear the problem. I put new roll and ink cartridge in and still showing error

Happend twice to me. What sometimes happens is that the paper roll was not changed at the time the ink was. Therefore the paper roll was allowed to remain in the printer until the very last sheet. On the last sheet there is a sticker that says paper out. (stupid idea) This sticker makes the last sheet of paper too thick to fit through the last paper guide / feed. Because of this, the ink film breaks and that specific error message is displayed until that last piece of 4x6 is pulled from the paper feed. Clear that out, and all is good.. Change the paper every time u change the ink.

Ink ribbon was chewed up in my son snap lab and resulted in paper jam. I cleared the jam and repaired the ink ribbon and it still is reading that error. How can I fix this?

You must open up the front where the roll goes. Lay the printer back, and look up top where the paper ejects. you should see some of the paper in the feed. Pull that out with a tweezers.

Beware. I sent my printer to Sony and they tried to get me for a new cutter and thermal head. Close to $500. I then realized the problem because it happened on another unit I own. I told them to ship it back unrepaired and I fixed it myself.
Hope this helps

Two lines show on my 5x7 prints

If the machine has mainly printed 6x4,When you
go to print 7x5 the edges of the head and rollers
tend to be dirty and will leave the two stripes along
the edge of the prints.Use the cleaning ribbon and the
sticky pad supplied with a new box of paper to clean the machine.Depending on how bad it is it may take a few try's.To do this switch the machine on and enter the control panel by tapping twice on the top left of the monitor- It will ask for a four digit code - Uless it has been changed this will be 9999 click
Enter/Ok - then click on the top far right ikon and
the screen you see will have a greyed out ikon
bottom middle - Now replace the print ribbon with
the white cleaning ribbon supplied with the machine
and the greyed out button becomes active - Click on
this button and the machine asks if you want to clean
it click Enter/Ok - About 10" of paper will then be
driven from the machine place the sticky pad as per
the drawing on it onto the paper and press Enter/Ok
- The paper will move in and out a few time and then eject a big piece and some small pieces of paper - Then remove the white cleaner ribbon and replace with the print ribbon and press the green return button
in the bottom right of the screen to return to normal use. This should be performed every two - three boxes
of paper.

Hot to change ribbon on sony m8800

Its not too hard to change. I have done this once before. Open main unit. Remove cd mech to get to the other end of the ribbon. Remove this end first. Manually rotate the motor worm gear until screws on head unit are visible. Install ribbon in head unit then main unit. Make sure the ribbon contacts and ribbon are positioned/routed the same way. Rotate that motor (end to end) again to see if the ribbon hangs up anywhere.
