Try connecting a Pen drive or any other USB storage device and see whether it's able to recoznize them or not.

If it does not recoznize them then I would suggest that you restart your computer and go to the Boot Up screen log into BIOS. Once you get to the BIOS go to the option that shows USB decives. If they are disabled, then change them to enabled.

If this too does not resolve your issue, then try instally the USB drivers once again.

If this does not resolve the problem, then the problem is likely in your Hard drive.

What is the difference between a external hard

External hard drives contain a power supply to operate a standard hard drive in a case. It usually connects to a USB port. Usb drives get their power from the wire that connects it to the USB port A regular internal hard drive gets it's power from the computer's power supply wiring. The data cable is either a flat ribbon cable or a 6 pin cable that connects directly to the mother board.

Drive stopped responding -- problem with power supply or drive?

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

if this fails to fix the problem

check usb leads for secure dust free seating

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems
hope this helps

My external hard drive is not responding its making some type of sound I wouldn't call it a click more like a hump nosie, and it wont register on my computer, the light comes on but nothing is...

This few things can be the cause

  1. the usb port that the external is connect to is not 2.0
  2. the pc port is not supplying the required amount of power to the usb external
  3. you may be using a usb extension cord instead of connecting directly to the port
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

  1. Make sure that you are using the supplied usb cord or a very similar one
  2. change the usb port that the external is connected to (it could be a faulty low powered usb port)
  3. remove any usb extention card that is attached (leave on the supplied one)
  4. try connecting to a friends pc and see what happens
  5. during connection to the pc make sure no other usb device is connected
  6. maybe it is time to get a new external case. should not coat more that $15.
good luck

My seagate freeagent 1tb is blinking whit lights and my computer does not recognize it. Help me

***Please NOTE***
Touch the drive and put your ear to it, to test if the drive is spinning and working. Do this while it is powered on. Also, try disconnecting the USB cable, reboot the computer, re-connect USB cable to another USB port on computer. If you still have the same issue, try the below solutions.
  • Make sure the computer and external hard drive are powered on.
  • Disconnect the external drive's USB or the eSATA cable, which ever one you're using.
  • Disconnect the power supply plug from the external drive.
  • Power off the computer.
  • Disconnect the computer's power supply cord for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the computer.
  • Power on the computer.
  • Connect the power supply to the external drive.
  • Connect the drive's USB or the eSATA cable and check for detection.
If the still no detection and still blinking lights on the drive, check the power supply to the drive.
Check to see what the led light on the power supply is doing.
If it's blinking, power down the drive, unplug data cable and then reconnect the power supply to another electrical outlet. If it still blinks repeatedly, then you power supply is bad.
If the led is solid (lit and not blinking) follow the same steps from above to connect it to another outlet.
Next, plug the power supply to the external drive and power it up.
If the power supply starts to blink repeatedly, then your controller board inside the enclosure is bad.

Thank you for the opportunity to help you.

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to fail to detect a hard drive continue on a cycle or to shutdown

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA and

the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty

My external hard drive is not responding when I plug it into my computer and the light on the power supply is flashing

Need to format the Drive, Start Menu, right click on My Computer, click on Manage, then disk management. You can format the drive for use in there. If you have formatted it already, just your connections, usb cables can go bad.

New Seagate FreeAgentPro USB eSATA 500GB power on light not glows

Thank you for your reply.

I have solved the problem with local help.

Printed installation manual of Seagate 500 GB eSATA external hard drive has not properly mentioned how to use power on/off switch once connected to mains. I could get local help, who has already used the device. On/Off switch to be pressed for few seconds after mains connected, sometimes it comes automatically once power is on and USB cable pluged to the USB port of PC if power supply is ok. There is no indicator for the power supply (before device glows) after connected to the mains. I was in confusion whether power supply is ok or not.

Finally, It was found that the problem was with mains power supply and I have changed the power socket and adapter.

Is my LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB fried/dead???

You're not missing any step at all, because with SATA hard drive if its really working your computer should
automatically detect it and since this hard drive suddenly stop working there's a possibility that its already
fried but if you want you can try this hard drive again to a different computer and if still not detected by
second computer its already dead.........

Hard drive i not recognized - and clicks

Is this an external hard disk?  If it is it probably indicates that it cannot get enough power from the USB.  You need an external power source.  use wither a second USB port or a plug in poer supply.
