Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I need to find a Digital Audio Tape (DAT) deck to play Maxell R-124DA and TDK DA-R180 tapes. DAT tape decks are no longer manufactured. The tapes contain voice and limited music and number between 100 and 200. Media conversion shops asked so far do not have DAT equipment and hence cannot do the work.

Dat equipment is readily available on Ebay and at sometimes unbelievable prices. Wouldn't you think manufacturers would stick to a format and stop inventing new ones just to sell more units and making perfectly good equipment useless. Pawn shops is a good place to find unused hifi gear also.

I just did a quickie search of The US Eby site and there are 1471 entries for DAT storage and player units. Some as low as $10 and dat tapes as low as a cent. Take a look, if Ebay scares you I can assure you there are more ripoffs happening in retail stores than on Ebay. I've been merrily saving a fortune on all types of equipment ever since it arrived in Australia. Buy the gear for next to nothing and do the work yourself, at least you'll know it's been done properly. There's even units which mount straight into your computer. DAT machine, editor and CD machine all in one. I might do like wise. I have a large collection of DAT tapes I picked up at an auction. HMMMMmmmmm.

The only way would be find one that sounds like the one you need and shoot off an email to the seller and ask a few questions. Any good seller should give the info you need. It may take a few emails but it's worth it if you find the right one.

A Technician usually has to get a tape out of a machine when this happens. In radio when I was Chief Engineer for several stations in Chicago I would send my defective decks to Russ at New Jersey Factory Service in Emerson NJ. He knows how to fix these units.

I have not been able to record LP's. The instructions mention hooking up the cables to the receiver outputs down to the TDK deck. Which outputs? Tape, Aux,? I tried splitting off of my phono outputs with...

your phono outputs are a whole diff ball of wax than aux or tape etc, whole diff signal, all that they should run to is phono in on the receiver. You are using the cd recorder as a tape deck more or less, so use tape out to line in on the tdk, and tape in from tdk output. so..when spinning record, you have receiver set on phono, and the tdk should also be receiving that signal, to playback you would hit tape monitor button on the receiver and hear what the tdk has done, or is doing.

I have a Tascam DA-30 which ejects the tape

Many different things could sause a problem, belts, mode switch, capacitors in capstan or head motor drive circuit. Hard to say what exactly is wrong with the machine without looking at it.

Converting Audio Cassettes to CDs

First off I assume you have the manual for you're 5700. if not a PDF copy is here
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/media/i3d/01/A/man-migrate/MANUAL000027911.pdf

Assuming you have a standalone tape deck that has phono inputs and outputs connection and recording recording should be easily achieved.
Forget the coaxial unless of course your tape deck has digital outputs.
Assuming it hasn't just connect the two output sockets from the tape dec which may be labelled REC out left and REC out right to the Line in (L) and Line (R) of the CD recorder.
The physical setup is now complete.
The increment level they refer to in the manual offers you a choice of 3 final decibel output levels in other words how loud it will be when it is finally recorded onto the disc.

the last paragraph on page 16 is relevant to the setup described above.

Page 15 of your manual is all you need to achieve tape transfer to CD.
follow the steps below and choose ANALOG the source to be played is your tape deck so once the process has begun press the play button on your tape deck and you should get a decent recording. Leave everything else at their default settings until you get a better understanding of how to tweak your recordings.
Personally I transfer audio tapes directly to my PC and Audio edit them until they are perfect but I've been doing this for years.

Good luck

The DAT machine needs new belts and maybe some cleaning. These fail all the time due to old belts that lose the tension that is required.

sounds like a defective cassette housing, but i have seen problems with jvc decks and camera when tdk or maxell tapes were used. the lids on these tapes seem to get stuck in the cassette housings in jvc equipment. jvc even recommends that tdk and maxell tapes be avoided.
