Inspiron 530 desktop--- computer boots up, runs just fine for a while, then monitor displays gabled multi-colored patterns, then evetually shuts down.

What is shutting down, the monitor or the computer. Check the power light on each for proper diagnosis. You either have a bad monitor, a bad video display card or a bad PC, specifically a power supply or motherboard. This is a classic symptom of something getting too hot and shutting down. One way to test the monitor is to plug it into something else for an a period of time and test. If you're PC is shutting off, try unplugging unnecessary peripherals, i.e. CD/DVD drives, floppy drives, external USB peripherals, etc. Start with just the video adapter, keyboard, mouse and monitor. Let us know what is shutting off, for further diagnosis.

Whyisscreen jumpy and jerky

mcdevito75 here, You can try, shut down your computer useing START SHUT OFF COMPUTER, when computer is shut down double check all connections at the computer and Monitor, also check wall socket. Now! restart your computer, check the controls on the monitor, if you have a button auto press it, this will automatically set your monitor. If all this fails, contact Dell, you may have a faukty monitor. Computer does not control monitor screen except for brightness and volume, problem most likely with the monitor itself.

About 10 seconds after i turn on my aspire 3690 the fan shuts down. the laptop will run for several minutes and then it shuts down also probibly from overheating. The fan starts each time i start but shuts...

First thing I'd check is for a BIOS update for your computer under the Acer support pages (acer.com). In some cases, thermal control updates are included in newer version of the BIOS, if it is a manufacturing problem.
Goto http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php and download Hardware Monitor, start the computer and immediately run the hardware monitor app to check how high the temperature on the CPU gets before it shuts down.
Continuing use under this condition may damage your Windows installation because of the sudden shutdown.

My error; my Gateway is GM5688E. The monitor shuts

Try to determine first whether its a no video problem from the computer or the monitor. Try a known good working monitor and see if the monitor still shuts off, if it does then you know the problem lies within the computer. If it doesn't shut off then you know your original monitor is bad.

Monitor just went blank, no power light.

Was the PC running, and then shut down? Or, did it never start in the first place?
It sounds like it could be one of many things. Sometimes if the processor fan has failed, the computer will start up, and then shut down. Also, bad memory can cause the PC to shut down.

Try making sure the video card's Display Settings have the Screen Resolution set to a level that are compatible with your LCD monitor. Try starting at 800x600, applying the settings and testing them, and moving up slowly until it doesn't work anymore, then stay at that same level.
