I cant adjust the focus or change the power on my Redfield 15-45 Spotting Scope. I think it might be something simple like a loose set screw.

If you are the original owner of your Redfield Spotting Scope, I know Redfield will repair or replace your problematic scope for free.

(I know there's a lifetime, no-questions policy for their riflescopes, but for the spotters, you do need to be the 'original owner'. Details online here.)

I hope the helps.

How to use a spotting scope for shooting?

A Spotting Scope is an essential element for hunters and shooters. This small device is technically a special type of telescope used for hunting, magnifying and watching an image or object more clearly. The methods use a shooting spotting scope does not involve much difficulty.

Here is the method:

Comfortable position

For a perfect shooting experience, you need a comfortable position. If your comfortable position is unable to help you fix the targeted area, you are likely to miss the hit or glance.

Attachment of the spotting scope with the tripod

Having an accurate view of the targeted area is important. Due to this reason, shooters need to position the spotting scope with a tripod so that they can see the targeted area very clearly and accurately.

Adjustment of the magnification level

The lens and magnification level should be adjusted so that you can get the appropriate view of the targeted area.

View of the targeted area

After fixing the targeted area, you have to adjust the magnification level with the lens to view the targeted area. At the time of using scopes, you will find some problems that magnification will present. If you fix the magnification and focus firstly, you may not find the target. You have to first view the target, and you have to adjust magnification level as required. Here, you should bear in mind you will have to go with the slow magnification process because the fast magnification process cannot give the accurate target.

Adjustment of the focus
You have to know how to reset the focus because you will need to do it again and again. It may sometimes harm your eyes with the magnification level being set to high.
Focusing on target is important for shooting and the spotting scope is also important for this purpose. For acquiring a specific target, it is important to use magnification level with the spotting scope.

You should follow all the methods of using explained above. There is no alternative way to learning how to use a spotting scope for shooting except these methods.

How many ft lb of torque for scope rings

A typical torque setting for scope bases (on a steel reciever) is 30 in/lbs. The rings (steel) need 15-20 in/lbs.

For a aluminum receiver and/or rings, 15-20 in lbs is about max. I use 10 in/lbs with blue Locktite for aluminum receivers and rings.

Here's the info I found on Redfield's website:
Warranty InformationWhen Leupold purchased Redfield in April, 2008, Leupold did not assume the Redfield warranty. Because many Redfield customers have contacted Leupold with regard to the former Redfield warranty, Leupold is making this information available to Redfield optics owners.
At this time, three Redfield repair facilities are available should your Redfield product require service: Parson's Scope Service(513-867-0820), ABO USA Inc (305-859-2010) and Iron Sight Inc. (918-445-2001). The contacts provided are for information purposes only, as these companies are not affiliated with Leupold & Stevens. Please contact them for all information regarding repair, service, and associated charges.
As a courtesy we are now offering 20% off the price of a new Leupold scope, up to $100, in trade for any defective Redfield scope. If you would like to take us up on that offer you may call us at 1-800-LEUPOLD.
