My riding mower will start by pull cord but not from ignition

My riding mower will start by pull cord but not from the ignition. The ignition is brand new and will turn the engine off when it is running (from pull starting), and will not start when is in off position (from pull starting). This makes me beleive the ignition is fine. The battery is brand new as well and i also replaced the fuse. It started fine last year before the ignition went bad on it so i replaced it but it's still not starting. Why won't it start fom the ignition?

Already did that.. I traced the wires and they all seem to be fine, and the connections and battery terminals are fine too. Could it be a solenoid problem? If so is there a way to test that?

They are tight and clean... I'm aware it's a pretty simple electrical and ignition system that's why this is so frustrating. Any other suggestions?

I realize this, but the connections on the battery have to be tight and clean, there is not much detail with the starting systems primary ignition system.

  • GetMeOttaHere May 11, 2010

Check the battery connections and make sure they are tight and not rusted.

Seems like you have the ignition wires connected incorrectly.

I have a Troy-Bilt Briggs and Stratton 675 series lawn mower. The pull cord is stuck and will not move. I can lightly pull the cord repeatedly and the cord slowly allows me to pull more but if I release it...

Take the plug out and try to move the blade. If the motor won't rotate, the problem might be with the motor and the cord can't move because of it.

Pull start won't pull, seems stuck.

When you pull the cord it will turn the blade. Therfore if the blade is stuck or clogged with clippings the starter cord will seem stuck. In addition, the throttle on the handgrip need to be fully depressed for the starter cord to work. Last, some mowers have a saftey which lock the starter if the wheels are engaged. Hope this helps. Cant get my mountfield lawn mower started, it is petrol and i have primed it by pressing the pump button as per the instructions on the mower. there doesnt seem to be any resistance when i pull the start...

make sure there is a spark plug in. that would be 1 reason why there is no resistance when you pull the cord. if there is a spark plug in then check to see if there is a clunking sound when you pull the cord if this is the case then the engine has a broken conecting rod..good luck

How can you start a Ariens 824 snowblower

Ignition key on, throttle three quarters on, full choke, press primer 3 or 4 times, pull cord. Should cough, maybe start and run rough, then as it's chugging, turn choke to half, then quarter choke, let it warm up slightly, then choke off.
