Question about Computers & Internet

I have 2 computers running Windows 7 and I am trying to create a home group, this is the message I get on either computer: "Windows cannot setup a homegroup on this computer" The trouble shooter does not get me anywhere! I am running a network with a D-Link DIR-300 router, which works fine.

The two computers are on a Home ethernet network, One is a Pentium 4 upgraded from Visa Business, while the other is a brand new Quad core Intel i5. the network is connected by a Siemens Speed Stream to Broadband. (there is also a Pentium 4 with Windows XP on the home network and a wireless Toshiba laptop.

Both computers run windows 7 Home Premium, so that is not the problem. Both also run CA protection, which includes a Firewall. Could it be that the router's firmware is not up to date, or does that not have any effect?

You must be working night shift, it is here 14:30 Australian Eastern Time.

W7 does not have an "Open network", this reminds me of "Vista". I can go to "Computer - Network" then it shows on both computers: ACER (my Wife's, the XP computer) ;RICK-PC AND VIDEO-PC, my 2 computers. I do not know how to open "Sharing centre", this is not familiarto me.

    Hi,

My 2 computers in question are called RICK-PC & VIDEO-PC.

    RICK-PC:

    1. When I go to" Computer", Network shows

ACER (my wife's computer), RICK-PC & VIDEO- PC

    2. When I go to "Network & Sharing Centre", it shows:

It is connected through the network to the Internet

    See full map shows

connected to the Internet via a Question mark (?) and the DIR-300 router

The following discovered devices cannot be placed in the map:

    VIDEO-PC & [ACER]

    VIDEO-PC

    1. When I go to "Computer", Network shows

I thought this might be helpful, rick Nauta

You will need to delete "idstore.sst" from the %appdata%\peernetworking folder. You can get to this folder by going into:

windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking

For that make sure you get reply with ping command from router.
Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "ping 192.168.1.1 -t" then press ok.If you get reply then your comuter is in network but if you get request time out then you need to check connection of lan cable and ip address.
You can set ip address in network adapter property then set gateway as router ip.
also make sure your network adapter is enable.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

When you connected the computer to the network, which option did you choose, Home Work, Public? Are both computers the same?

On your dir-300 router is wireless. Are both systems connected wireless?

The homegroup is dependent on the addressing from the router.

Under Windows 7, a homegroup is created
automatically. If a homegroup already exists on your home network, you
    can join it.
So, if you connected the Pentium 4 to the router, you should have been asked about the homegroup.
When you then connected the new computer, it would recognize that you are on a network with a homegroup and you will be asked if you want to join. The first computer to be in the group should have gotten a popup screeen with the homegroup password.
You will need that password to join the group.

In Windows 7 Starter and Windows 7 Home Basic, you can join a
homegroup, but you can’t create one.
So, if you have these versions of Windows 7, you will not have this option.

    Hello from California.

SInce you have Win 7 home premium, what does your computer say when you click on Open Network and Sharing Center?

I will be online for about another 30 minutes for email, then on again in 10 hours or so.

Here is what I know about the HomeGroup:

You don't create them, Windows does.
The only control you have is what can be shared.
If you share, the others can see you.
Home is the most open, Public is the most restrictive.

If you cannot see the other Windows computer check the Network and Sharing Center on each.

Windows 7 has a search box above the circle Windows Flag button when it is pushed. If you click the flag and type network into the search box you will see Network and Sharing Center.
When you are there you will see a small house with the name of the network, public, home or work.
There is an option to Choose homegroup and sharing options. This is where the settings are for your network.

Any machine that are on the network can be seen by Windows 7 if it's
    network discovery is turned on.

Is this setting turned on on the Windows 7 machines?

Where a machine is not Windows 7, it cannot be seen on Windows 7
    Homegroup

As in like a Citrix solution for home? You can setup RDP through windows which is a remote connection to another system on your network. You can do this by clicking Start > Run then typing MSTSC and hitting okay. You can then type the name of the other computer and it should prompt you for credentials. You may need to do a bit of setup on the remote computer first, such as adding your network username and password into the remote users group (right click my computer, choose manage, local users and groups, groups

I found a possible solution for this problem with another older Nancy Drew Game; I would try this solution and see if it helps with your problems.

The game is too old to run on Vista (assuming that's what you have) but it's easy to fix.

Just do this:
•First, uninstall the game.

•Next, reinstall the game--but don't do AutoPlay. Instead, go into my computer, right-click on the game's icon, and choose "explore".

•You need to then find the "setup" icon, and choose "properties". There's more than one "setup" icon, but only one that allows you to choose "properties".

•After that, go to the compatibility tab, and check the box that says something like "make compatible for"...choose XP, or ME/2000 if you want to play it safe.

•Exit out of the My Computer screen (though in Vista, it's just called Computer). On the start menu, open up your **Documents** window.

•Create a new folder and name in Message in a Haunted Mansion, or something you will, without a doubt, remember.

•Go back to Computer, double click on "setup" and start installing.

•Install as normal, but when you get to the part where you save the game, it's very important that you save it in the documents folder you created. Otherwise, it won't automatically create a folder for itself, and problems occur.
