Yes, there's definitely a problem with the power communications portion on the main board. However, you cannot just easily conclude that the problem is the main board.
There could be some components that got shorted and needs to be replaced. It would be better if it's only the components, because it will not cost too much. If it's the main board, it's just like you buy a brand new iPod.
I would suggest to contact an experienced tech and have him fix it for you.
