The battery was replace a month prior to this happening, yes it was sitting on my lap while watching the movie and could feel the heat, I noticed a smell like a wire may have burned when it happeneed, I have tried the computer with and without the battery and holding the start button to discharge and reserve power before trying to turn it on, when I plug the power adapter in there are three light that come on , on the front , I do not hear any sounds, as soon as I press the power on button the lights all go out immediatley, no fan noise , nothing, there were no issues prior to this, and no new hardware added etc. thank you for what you have replied with so far, I blew out the fans and they were clean ,

I went ahead an opened it up and found a ic chip that is fried, it is located near where the battery would be , The board appeared clean and I could find no other parts that looked suspect, I wrote down the numbers off the chip and have done a computer search but no luck finding it nor a schematic for the presario x6000, Here is what was written on the chip P4407 then right below those BE432B , any ideas what this chip does or where one can be found? Thanks for all your help.

sorry I havent replied in months of having this problem, bought the new power cord etc etc, tried all the fixes everyone online said to try, nothing worked, so found a non working motherboard on ebay for $20.00 , pulled the suspected chip and transplanted it into the x6000 (easier said than done) and been fine ever since, but am now using with cooling pad underneath, may even add another fan if I can, thanks for all the help.

Sounds like your heat sink and fan are clogged up with lint and dust. Very common problem but no so easy to resolve if you have never disassembled one. 1st thing to do is shine a flashlight at the fan area. Do you see thru it or does it look obstructed from dust? Before going inside the laptop you can try a vacume and or a can of pressurized air to clear the fins of the heat sink. If it still overheats you need to open the laptop and clean it out. Here is your repair manual.
section 5.19 refers to the fans and disassembly instructions. Good luck! Phil. P.S. The fans are on the bottom so if you have it in your lap or on a table it will overheat from lack of air. Set the laptop on two books spread apart to see if it works. If this works buy a laptop cooling pad they work great.

As Kornho said the board has to be replaced. Replacing the chip is hard enough with the right tools, but how do you know what caused it to blow in the first place? There may be other components that have also been damaged. Watch EBay and you can probably pick up a unit with a good board fairly cheap. Good Luck

Ok so power adapter has been ruled out as the problem.

lets rule out the battery pack as the next usual suspect. simply deattach the battery and plug the computer to the ac with the adapter and see if the computer turns on. if it does, replace the battery

do you get any beep codes by any chance? do you see any lights on the computer itself?
how do you know that it overheated? did you see smoke? where you watching the movie while the bottom of the computer was not being ventilated?

if no lights come on your problem is more serious as it could be the a blown capacitor in your motherboard or a loose power adapter (which a computer repairshop /electrician could replace or resold for you for a fee) or the cpu that has gone out in which case means you need to replace your computer and sell the laptop for parts in kijiji.

a smell, may be a capacitor that got blown, chances are you motherboard needs replacement. unless you have the tools and know how to change a capacitor, your last resort at this point is an actual repair shop..

unless you don't mind chatting with someone in china which may sell you the part needed (simple google p4407 and do a RFQ),
you are probably better off purchasing the whole motherboard, find it here

    good luck!

I have a compaq presario x6000. every time i place the laptop on my bed and turn it on it cuts off within 5 minutes. but when I place it on a desk and turn it on it does not cut off. do not understand why...

The reason is because when the laptop is placed on the bed the cooling vents are blocked and the CPU overheats and shuts down. When the laptop os placed on a flat surface there is sufficient clearance between the bottom of the laptop and the flat surface of the desk to provide sufficient air circulation.
If you wish to use the laptop in bed then place the laptop on a flat surface and not let the bed clothes cover the laptop's cooling vents.

Computer shuts down

Your computer is most likely overheating.

Make sure it is positioned so that none of the vents are blocked on the unit.
Check it with your hand to see if it's overheating, make sure dust is not blocking the vents.
If the issue persists, could be software or a failed cooling system on the unit.
