This problem is somewhat common and is caused by dust/toner buildup in the laser optics. Unfortunately it requires quite a bit of dis-assembly to get the laser unit out of the machine in order to clean it. If you are mechanically inclined and really want to do this yourself just locate and dowload the service manual. It has instructions for laser unit removal. If you don't want to do this then you should be able to get it done for less than $100.
If you remove the 4 toner cartridges first then look at the area behind where the cartridges were. You should see kind of a black plastic box looking area with 4 "slots" about 1/4" high running from one side to the other. These "slots" are where the laser comes thru to write the print onto the drum in the 4 cartridges. You can try cleaning the front side with a cue tip. This might help but usually the problem is the toner/dust is on the inside of this unit and the only way to clean it is to remove the laser box and dis-assemble/clean it.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

The Magenta colour on my 2605dn is no longer coming out properly (very faint). The cartridge was replaced by made no difference. All other cartridge colours work fine. Tried cleaning and calibrating but...

A faded magenta on this model is probably a dirty scanner mirror.
The printer design puts a fan in an area that blows magenta toner directly at the laser scanner.
The more toner on the mirror, the more faded the print.
You will need to remove the scanner and clean it.

Red does not print on one side of the page

I have bad news :( when that happen on this model its because one of the lasers its contaminaded. Dust or toner get inside the unit and block the light of the laser for the magenta causing issues with color that uses red. If you print a configuration report the red look faded in the sides. Changing the cartridge wont fix it. it can be repaired but its expensive. I suggest to get a new model. or if you call HP they can exange it for about $200

Have just replaced Magenta toner cartridge (HP own). Red is now orange and colours seem faded. Any suggestions

that is something called laser scanner contamination, behind the magenta catridge there is a little piece of glass wich is the laser scanner. clean the glass run at least 3 cleaning modes and then sent a test page and see if it gets fixed.
if not take the printer to a service center to make a deeper cleaning or in the worst case scenario to replace the lase scanner

MY HP ''COLOR LASER JET 2600n'' HAS FUOLL INK CARTRIDGES BUT THE PRINTING IS REALLY DULL AND FADED LOOKING. CAN ANYONE HELP? TERRY M.

This is a common problem with this model of printer. The scanner optic degenration is due to dust buildup on mirrors and lenses. Since the most vulnerable mirror reflects its laser beam to the magenta toner cartridge, red tones are the first to show fading. Colours shift: purples turn blue and oranges turn yellow. The printer will need to be cleaned by a certified HP technician to resolve this issue as it means dismantling your printer to fix the problem.

This printer has stopped printing reds and oranges correctly ? they are faded. Changed the toners & no difference

Print a "Config Report" from the printers menu...If u notice that the fourth square on the left side (fourth being the bottom square) for Magenta (reds and orange) is missing or very faded, this could indicate that the optical mirrors inside the printer have to be cleaned...Design flaw. ESP..if changing toners doesn't work and your your faded issue is with Magenta (Pink, red, or orange) colours are the only faded ones...With this design flaw in the optical mirrors, magenta mirror is the first to be affected!
Hope this helps!!!! I work in the industry :)

Our Magenta cartridge is not printing properly. We replaced it with a brand new cartridge and the problem remains the same. It barely prints, if at all, to the left of the page and gradually increases...

It's probably a dirty laser scanner. The magenta is most prone to this type of problem. Here's a link for instructions. http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/getattachment.do?attachmentId=297096&ext=.pdf

Magenta cartridge not working despite being full

This happens due to Laser sCANNER Contamination.

Light Output that typically starts fading along the outside edges of the media. The first noticable color would be Magenta.

Dusty Environments can lead to Laser Scanner Contamination. The dust layer on the mirrors prevents proper transmission of the laser output in the imaging system leading to faded colors on the printed page. The initial stages of this failure typically occur in the magenta or yellow color planes as faded or light color. Often the left side is more faded than the middle.

You may need to contact the nearest Authorized Service Tech and get teh Laser Scanner replaced with the new released service part that has a mirror in a location where the dust ideally cannot reach eazily.

Also, please ensure that the printer is relocated from the current location to a more dust free zone.

Every page covered in magenta and black won't print across the page

This is caused by toner contamination in the laser scanner unit, it is quite a complex job removing and cleaning the laser scanner. I would suggest you contact HP regarding the repair.
