This issue is a possible mother board going bad or a power supply switch that is "open and needs replacement. I tend to go towards the latter. Replace the power supply.

the power switch may be defective (open).

Check your BIOS. It may be set to "boot when AC power is on". Most new mobos can be set to either "stay off " or "stay on"

Computers doesn't startup and has no beep

remove the RAM chip and start the computer without the ram chip inserted and see if you get beeps if yes the motherboard/bios is ok, even if you dont get to hear any beeps, try rubbing the edge of the ram which goes into the ram slot using a Eraser and then reinsert the same back in Ram slot and then see if you can at least get to bios and see if hard disk is detected as windows boots from hard disk if yes check if you can boot to windows if no may need to reinstall windows.please reply with results so that can help

When powering the laptop, it has power for about 4 seconds and then turns off. The screen doesn't come on or doesn't even start the booting process. What would cause this to happen?

Hi there,

Are you using battery power or is it connected to your power outlet (AC = alternating current)?

If you're on battery make sure that the there is enough charge for the battery to turn on your computer, you can also try to remove the battery and plug it directly to AC, otherwise your laptop may have a bad hardware (mobo, RAM, Videocard, etc) does it give you any beeping sound when you turn it on?

(If you feel confident enough)
You can try to remove the RAM, Hard disk drive, wireless card on the back of your laptop then try turning the computer on and check if it will give you any beeping noise. Now put the parts you have removed back to the computer one by one while turning on the computer before putting the next one in. (Example: put the RAM in turn the computer on, turn it off again then put the Hard disk drive in and so goes the other parts)

If the above steps does not work. You can try calling Sony so they can check on the motherboard and the video card of your laptop.

Hope this helps!

Test your motherboard first - unplug everything (except at least some of the RAM) and see if it boots up. You should at least get a beeping sound.

If that works, check the RAM piece by piece - you can find a free program called MemTest (or Memtest86) online with will run from the boot menu, so it will execute and test all your RAM chips before the hard drive even starts up. If that all checks out fine, add in graphics card, hard drive, etc until you find the component which breaks it.

Tecra M2 doesn't boot is it a processor problem?

given the symptoms, it points to motherboard.. if it was processor, video or ram. it wouldnt boot at all and you'd just get error beeps from your laptop. i'd first try resetting the bios, by removing the bios battery for 30 min, then putting it back in. if that doesnt work try changing it out, usually costs under 8 bucks. if that doesnt work then I would change out the motherboard, if its cost effective.

Not everything powers up when I turn on my disassembled computer

remove first the power suppy. if it is 24pin power suppy, shorten pin 15/16. that is the black and green,
if the fan of power supply rotates, then the P.S. is ok.
then return it to motherboard. check your connection with the motherboard power switch.
good luck

Power problem i think

If there is no beep, even after removing RAM means you have faulty Motherboard and/or faulty Processor.

Try to reconnect CUP also clean the CPU socket on board and try to test without RAM, if you got long beep (RAM missing) then proceed further i.e. add RAM, HDD, CD/DVD etc step by step.

If didn't get any beep try to test with other motherboard/CPU to find which one is faluty.

Please post your feedback.

Thanks and Good Luck

3 Beep sounds-No boot

As you probably know 3 long beeps on an Intel motherboard is memory failure. Even if RAM is good your Motherboard may have problems in reading your ram module.
If you are using a PCI or AGP video card try also removing and putting back video card, video adapters use shared RAM and can give you troubles with RAM.
Always perform all maintainance on motherboard with power unplugged and avoid to touch contacts and circuits with your finger.
If the 1GB module is new, verify with seller that your motherboard support this memory, some motherboard do not support double density RAM.
