Hi,
Check the fan underneath by the compressor... the fan blades are bent or coming apart...you can easily replace that condenser fan and blades...that will quiet things down for you...

Refrigerator clicks then hums but does not get the compressor going. Bad compressor - how do you test if starter switch or compressor?

The clicking sound you hear is the overload relay trying to start the compressor. The humming sound is the compressor. Purchase a overload relay kit. Unplug the unit. Remove the bottom back cover. On the side of the compressor is a black box. Usually held on by hard wire clips. Remove the cover. Inspect for burned wires. Take note of the relay components. Remove them and lay them out in the order and orientation in which they were removed. If you see burn marks on the you have a bad relay, also the white 'V' shaped component - shake it. If it rattles it is bad. Replace with the new overload. If everything looks good. With a multi-meter measure the Ohms across the three pins on the compressor. You will get One high reading. Across the other two you will get lower readings. The two lower readings when added together must equal the high reading. If they do not you have a bad compressor. To replace a compressor is a major repair. The cost is usually $600.00-$750.00.

Rule of thumb; "If the repair cost is 1/3 or more of your initial purchase price of the unit - Buy a new unit".

What could cause loud popping sounds?

The sounds you are hearing is the defrosted water, from auto defrosting, running onto the hot compressor. This evaporates the defrosted water. This is quite normal.

Similar to another persons question...have a circa 1995 cambell hausfeld piston type compressor, has been great for past 17 years. it was building pressure, albeit the source at the tire fitting...

Woody:

Your compressor is losing pressure somewhere... check both ends of the air tube between the compressor head and the tank. The loud pop may have been the packing at one end or the other. You'll have to remove the head again to remove the air tube, but I believe your problem is the pressure seal at one end of the tube or the other.

When compressor tries to turn ''on'' a loud ''click'' can be heard. The fan in the ''freezer'' compartment blows semi-cool air (stays at 56 degrees F). It will cycle like this. Have since unplugged it...

Good day,
Either the start relay mounted on the side of the compressor has failed, or the compressor has locked up or lost it's start winding.
You can pull the relay off the compressor after removing it's cover and have it tested. If it tests bad, replace it. If it tests good, then the compressor needs replaced.

Constant loud noise when frig turns on/comes from bottom

when the compressor is running unplug the ref. and if you hear the noise coming from the compressor then
a ballance spring may be broken inside the compressor.

The compressor will run normally with a broken spring it will just be annoying when it shuts down.

A three loud consecutive popping sounds at various

You probably have a bad compressor. It's internal parts are held up with 4 springs and one of them has probably broken and causes the compressor piston to hit the side of the comp. housing. This will happen when the ref. shuts off. To be sure, if you turn the ref off at the controls then you should hear the noise in the back. If it is less than 5 years old you can get it replaced under warranty. if more than 5 years old it will just be noisy. it will most likely last several more years like it is. Let me know if I'm right.
