Question about Western Digital Passport WDXML800UE (WDXML800UETE) 80 GB Hard Drive

Format harddrive for PC and mac, other than FAT32

Is there another way than FAT32 to format the hard drive so it works on both PC and mac. I have problems with the size limits on the files I can back up (max 4 GB, and I understand that that is a limitation with the FAT32 format?)

Unable to read external HDD after plugging it to a Mac (previously it is readable via a Windows PC)

Chances are it was formatted as NTFS format by the PC which is not MAC compatible. You will need to reformat the drive in HFS format if you want it to work as a MAC disk only or in FAT32 format if you want to read it in PC and MAC machines.

If the Seagate has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read and write to this hard disk.
If you want to exchange data between a PC and a MAC then the hard disk needs to be formatted on a PC in FAT32 file format.

External hard drive used on mac,how do i use it on pc?

You need to format this hard drive using your PC.
If the hard drive was formatted using the MAC then the PC won't see anything on the hard drive because the MAC uses a different file system that is not compatible with the PC.
BUT if you want to exchange files between the MAC and the PC then format the hard drive using the PC in FAT32 file system. The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard drive.

My son in law is trying to save some files from his Mac notebook to a HP PD0800 pocket media drive. Does he need a special driver?

If he only wants to use HP pocket drive with the MAC, then he needs to format the pocket drive with the MAC notebook.
If he wants to exchange files between the MAC and a PC, then he needs to format the pocket drive with a PC. The pocket drive needs to be formatted in FAT32.
A MAC will then be able to read and copy PC files in FAT32 format.

I can't restore pc formatted external hard drive back to Mac use

You probably formatted your harddrive in NTFS. NTFS is a so called "file system", but it is designed by microsoft, it only works on microsoft systems and on some linux distributions. However it is not compatible with mac.
So what now? You can go and find software that makes your mac ntfs compatible, or you could backup the files on a windows computer, format your drive in FAT32 and copy the files back to the drive. Take a look at this: http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/ That should make your mac NTFS compatible.
good luck!

My Freeagent external hard drive doesn't show up on My Computer

Your Mac would have formatted the Seagate drive as HFS+ (journaled) format. If you have access to a Mac, copy your data off the Seagate to any Mac, then use your PC to reformat the Seagate drive in FAT32 format. Macs recognize FAT32 format, and can store data in it, but can't create the format. The Mac holding your data can store it on the Seagate in the FAT32 format, and you can then copy the files to your PC. Hope this helps.

Simple, you have to format it by selecting Dos Drive which supports NTFS format.  or else try other option which is to format it in PC computer be sure you will select the NTFS format not FAT32. Im sure you can use it now to both Mac and PC.
