Question about Acer Aspire 3000 Notebook
It sounds like you have the screen flipped (portrait for landscape). If you have XP, you will need to look at the display properties. I believe this is Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings. Then click on the Advanced tab. Look for a rotate screen option. (It may also be available from right clicking on the desktop - look for Display.)
If you upgraded to Win7, right click on the desktop, choose Screen Resolution and you'll find a line with a drop-down menu for Orientation.
