SOURCE: Expired in cartridge

I had the same issue with my Photosmart so I checked the HP web site and they said that some cartridges (including HP02) expire but you can override. Try opening the top of the printer and undoing the cartridge latch. Then relatch it and close the top. Worked for me (at least for now)

SOURCE: 8250 HP INK EXPIRED MESSAGE

I had same problem, and i solved it.
I opened my hp 8250 and removed it`s battery. It is located on left side of the printer, on the main board. You need to remove plastic covers , and then remove 3 screws holding board. You can move board just enough to get damn battery out of there. Now it works perfect!
I can send you some piccs if you need help.
Regards
Sasa

Why will my HP Photosmart 8250 not print in greyscale when one of the color tanks is empty, there is plenty of black ink.

Greyscale in obtained by using shades of color; meaning that all color (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) tanks must be full.

How can I still print if the ink cartridge is expired?

Usually, ink cartridges that are out of code (expired) can still work well. The ink can begin to evaporate or separate and can ruin your printer depending on what type you have. SOme cartridges come with the print heads attached, so they may clog or fail sooner, but will nto damage your printer. Best course of action is to trade in unopened packages to the manufacturer for new cartridges - some will take them back without a receipt, and some will not.

I am hoping I deciphered your question correctly. If not, please clarify your question a little more.
