Question about John Deere 420,1020,2010,2020,2510,2520 Tractor Float

J.D.x300 tractor 8 months old will not start. It started 3 weeks ago after winter storage. Fuses good,tank full(has fuel stabilizer),battery charged, brake is on,throttle is advanced, choke is on,sitting on seat.Can smell gas but it's as if there is no spark.It does not even try to start it just turns over. Ok a couple of things to try 1 try using starter fluid in carburetor 2 second spritz and crank does it fire or pop? if yes then there is spark, if not then pull spark plug and put new one and try again, if no then leave spark plug out of engine and lay on engine with wire connected and look for spark( do in shade to see better. if no spark then coil if bad. if it does fire on starter fluid, check gas filter and air cleaner it may be too lean or rich to fire properly.

    I had the exact same problem with my 2009 x300. The electrical board was bad and had to be replaced. The dealer said he had the exact same problem with 3 other x300's the same week. There was no spark (new battery, new plugs).

Why won't it start after winter storage?


Hi, Lucy if your bike has been sitting idle for months or years and you did not do any pre-storage maintenance I feel your pain it will probably have a dead battery and not want to start or if it starts it will idle and run poorly, here are the following steps necessary to complete in order to get your bike back to an acceptable running condition.
1. If your battery was 3 years or older when you last had the bike running you should replace it.
2. If you believe your battery might still be serviceable remove it from the bike and put it on a 1 or 2 amp trickle charger for 24 hours. If it is the old lead acid type with visible cells and acid levels fill each cell to the top line with distilled water and replace the caps, run the vent tube into a plastic or styrofoam cup, any cells that are cloudy/milky replace the battery.
3. After charging remove the leads and let the battery sit for a couple of hours then check the battery voltage with a volt meter, you should have 12.5 volts or better, any readings in the 11 volt range you need to do a proper load test on the battery and replace as necessary, any readings in the 10 volt range you have a dead cell and replace the battery.
4. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
5. Remove your air cleaner and clean and re-oil per Mfg. specifications.
6. Remove the carburetor, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
7. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove fuel lines and replace with new ones.
8. Replace spark plug with a new one and check for spark.

Hi, Anonymous if your bike has been sitting idle for months or years and you did not do any pre-storage maintenance I feel your pain it will probably have a dead battery and not want to start or if it starts it will not idle unless the choke is full on and run poorly then stall, here are the following steps necessary to complete in order to get your bike back to an acceptable running condition and in the future pour in a bottle of fuel stabilizer and injector cleaner for you FI folks at least 2 times a year and before storage.
1. If your battery was 2-3 years old when you last had the bike running you should replace it.
2. If you believe your battery might still be serviceable remove it from the bike and put it on a 1 or 2 amp trickle charger for 24 hours. If it is the old lead acid type with visible cells and acid levels fill each cell to the top line with distilled water and replace the caps, run the vent tube into a plastic or styrofoam cup, any cells that are cloudy/milky replace the battery.
3. After charging remove the leads and let the battery sit for a couple of hours then check the battery voltage with a volt meter, you should have 12.5 volts or more, any readings in the 11 volt range you need to do a proper "LOAD" test on the battery and replace as necessary, you may have 12.5 volts or better but little or zero amps, any readings in the 10 volt range you have a dead cell and the battery needs to be replaced.

5. Remove and inspect your air cleaner paper elements that are not oil soaked can be cleaned with a soft brush and low pressure compressed air, oil soaked elements must be replaced. Gause mesh and foam elements can be cleaned by soaking them in a container big enough to completely cover them with a solution of 1 gallon of water and 1 oz. of Dawn dishwashing liquid for small and medium size elements, for monster size double the formula and let soak for at least one hour then rinse with warm water shake off excess and let air dry, "WARNING" do not use compressed air as this will embed micro-sized dirt and road grime and destroy the mesh pattern and stretch foam elements out of shape just squeeze it like a sponge and let air dry, use a fan if you're in a hurry. When completely dry spray a very fine mist of air filter oil evenly around the whole element.
6. Remove the carburetors, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
7. Check intake manifold and seals for leaks and cracks.
8. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove, clean, and inspect fuel and vacuum lines and replace as necessary.
9. Replace spark plugs with new ones and check for spark.

Can't find fuel overflow hose


Hi Randy, look for a smmal thin hose coming off of the carburetor float bowl, and the usual suspects are:
1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system.
2. Loose float bowl screws.
3. Damaged float bowl o-ring.
4. Improper fuel level in float bowl.
5. Worn or dirty inlet valve or seat.
6. Damaged or leaky float assembly.
7. Particle contamination in inlet fitting cavity.
8. Ethanol sludge, dirt, rust in bottom of fuel tank

The trick is to get out there and fire it up every week and run it for several minutes. Short of doing that - turn the fuel off and run the carbs out of gas before storing. Drain the old fuel out in the spring and refill with fresh fuel. You can add some fuel system cleaner/drier to the fresh fuel. Personally - I simply run the bike every week and add some fuel drier - like STP fuel treatment during winter months. I have never been a fan of the fuel stabilizers - unless you are talking about a huge volume of fuel, like on a boat. Running the bike every week keeps the battery charged, too.

carbs are dirty try this spray starter fulid only 2 to 3 sprays do not exsead
more if that works run it if not running right pull carbs off and bowls clean them do not touch any more then that if you dont know what your doing

Chk the fuel by draing the carb bowl and the black thing may bea ck valve. Remove it and see what happens. Oh! drain the old fuel entirely and fill with fresh fuel. Good Luck

Yes, yes, yes! Keep oil lubing the engine. If real cold to ride just starting it up at least once a week and let it warm up all the way. Also check your battery for full charge. If standing for months add "sta-bil" fuel stabilizer to your gas and follow instructions. Will not hurt engine. I add this every winter to all my bikes. Your bike will stay in great shape.

How do i drain gas from 20hp 42in yard tractor?


The best way will be to take the fuel line off the carburetor or off the fuel pump, if so equiped, and put it lower than the fuel tank on the mower. Drain into a gas container. You can then put this gas in your vehicle to burn, rather than let it sit and go stale over the winter months.

If you are just taking the fuel out for the winter, and not for any other purpose, you can purchase some fuel stabilizer, called "Stabil", and put about 2 oz. per gallon of gas that's in your mower tank. Slosh it around a bit, start your mower and let it run, or take it for a spin around the yard to make sure you get the stabilizer mixed in well and down into your carburetor.

If you do drain the fuel for the winter, after you are done start your mowers engine and let it run the carburetor dry. That will keep it from evaporating too bad and gumming up your carb. Still a good idea to run some stabilizer thru the carb prior to draining the tank.

Due to multible ankle surgerys my 99 dodge durango sat for the last 8 months I started it in december of 08 started right up while it was running it just stopped dead no shaking or motor coughing just...


My approach would be to check the fuel pressure coming to the fuel rail. It's possible the fuel line itself could get clogged. I know gasoline can turn into a varnish and clog up injectors, etc. Good luck.

I filled up my 1995 vet and 2 days later it will not start.


When you put the car away for the winter, was the fuel tank full and did you add any "stabil" fuel conditioner.
If the tank was not full you may have accumulated moisture over the winter.
You should be able to remove the filter and pour it into a glass jar to see if you have water in the fuel.
