This was a helpful solution. Hopefully I can purchase the pins required as it is unlikely that a replacement foot control is available.

Something with in your machine seems to be shorting out. Since it is many years old I suspect you have wires that the insuation is rotten and making a short. I have seen this before. Should get it repaired if it's worth it. You could be shocked or hurt.

I have a Bernina Sport and when I press the foot pedal only intermittently does power go to the machine. How do I correct this?

It could very well be the carbon brush. It is generally a piece of soft carbon (like pencil lead) with a spring on the end which applies pressure. When the carbon gets worn down, it does not make consistent contact. Depends on your machine model. I've replaced carbon brushes on the motor of an 830 Record, but I had to replace something in the foot control. Do not despair. The replacements can be found for ~ $12-15. Available multiple places. Just be sure they will fit your machine.

Bernina machine starts sewing anfmten stops or doesn't start at all.

Be sure that you regularly clean and oil your Bernina. If not oiled regularly, the old oil turns to varnish and actually freezes the parts. Some people believe something is wrong with the motor or foot control, when really it just needs some TLC to keep it running smoothly.

May be one of several issues--depends on the model Bernina. Could be a problem with the foot control. I had to replace a carbon brush in the foot control of my 930. (A new foot control could cost over $160!)

Or some machines (mostly older models, ie 830 Records) have carbon brushes on the motor that wear with age. Once they've worn down, they no longer make constant contact giving you the "intermittent" issue. I've replaced carbon brushes on some older Berninas--usually found somewhere around the motor (look for a screw or knob on the motor). You can buy replacements a lot of places. I've purchased them on eBay.

Likely you cannot repair it personally you will have to find a dealer to order a new electronic controller and cord to be installed inside the foot control.

My wonderful Bernina 1130 has served me loyally since purchase in 1988, often being used every day when I worked as a dressmaker. In recent years full-time work keeps me from sewing. My faithful Bernina...

Contact an authorized Bernina dealer/repair center. The service technician can often tell what board needs to be worked on, take it out and send to Bernina. I just had to have work done on my 1130 and that is what was done. If that does not work, look up the number and call Bernina USA directly so they can direct you. While it's true that some parts are no longer obtainable, the machine boards can be serviced by Bernina USA. It's worth fixing.

I have a Bernina 830, bought in 1978. When I depress the foot pedal, nothing happens. Power is on. Do I need a new pedal?

I've just fixed this problem by replacingthe main capacitor in the foot pedal. I have a Bernina 830. I needed a soldering iron, and I had to buy the right capacitor, but it fixed this exact problem. Btw, a few months ago this problem initially appeared (on my machine) as an issue where the speed was either zero, or full speed). After a white it wouldn't work at all.

Hi Tonette....I'm afraid that it is impossible for me to diagnose your current issue over the internet with any degree of confidence. However, I can educate you on typical norms for your specific situation and machine. Typical "tune-ups", also advertised as "clean, oil & adjust", range from $19.95 to $49.95. Of course, the 19.95 special is designed to get you in the door. Bernina Bobbin Cases do generally run on the 'higher' side of things, between 30 & 60 dollars. However, regardless of what Class any given Bernina is in, the electronic components all originate from the same manufacturers with similar benchmarks regardless of class. Replacement of any given electronic component, once accessed, is as simple as plug and play, with no adjustment or fine tuning required. As far as cutting your losses, in my opinion, you had already lost when you paid the 170.00
