Question about HP 35s Scientific Calculator

My calculator suddenly has become unusable. Entering any number results in a string of "ones" and "zeros" followed by a lower case "b".

You've apparently set your calculator to binary. Press right-shift BASE and select DEC to return to decimal.

I am having trouble figuring out how to enter problems to find logarithmic functions


Let me give you a general recipe to familiarize yourself with any calculator, if you are averse to reading the manuals.
Most function will work in one of two ways.
1st way
Enter the number, then press the key,; the result is displayed.immediately.

Second way
Press the function key ( a left parenthesis may be displayed) enter the number (close the right parenthesis if there was a left one) press the = or EXE or ENTER keys.

Try the two ways described above to calculate the following values. The answers are given. Here log is he decimal logarithm and ln is the natural logarithm.


log(1)=0
ln(1)=0
ln(2)=0.693147181
log(2)=0.301029996
ln(100)=4.605170186

log(10)=1 (= number of zeros after the 1)
log(100)=2. (= number of zeros after the 1)
log(1000)=3 (number of zeros after the 1)
log(10000)=4 (number of zeros after the 1)

TI-83 Plus: I tried changing the number of decimal places to 4, by the following: MODE + NORMAL + FLOAT then right arrow but the numbers there are 0123456789 and I cannot change that. Help


When you reach the FLOAT line and see the string of numbers 01 234 etc. you are supposed to use the right arrow to highlight one of the numbers in the string of digits. If for example you highlight the number 4 and validate, your results will be displayed with 4 decimal places.

Result display FIX
To change the number of decimal digits, press LEFT SHIFT (Blue) key then press (. In doing so you are setting your result display to FIX. Specify the number of digits you want by pressing 0, 1,2,3.., or 9

Result display ENGineering
Press LEFT SHIFT (Blue) key, then press ) key. Specify the number of decimal digits in the mantissa by pressing one of the number keys.

Result display SCIentific
Press RIGHT SHIFT (orange) key followed by (
press one of the digit keys (0,1,2,...,7,8,9) to specify the number of digits.

How can you change the settings to give a decimal answer instead of improper fractions


Hello,

If you want your decimal numbers to appear with the decimal point, and not in a fraction form, all you have to do is
Press [SHIFT]MODE][2:LineIO].

My personal opinion (if you care to hear it) is that the new TextBook Display is a major improvement in scientific calculators, because you see the link between what your write with pencil and what the secreen displays. Often students are ill-informed about operation priorities and enter their operations as they think it right, but results are wrong.
With the MathIO (texbook display) of the Casio you can spot right away what the calculator will do and hence correct it before it does it.

The other point is the following. If you have a short or long string of operations to do, you can do them all at one go, checking once in a while (on the display) that the sequence of operations is correct. After you finish entering the string of operations press [ENTER/=] key.
If the final result (the one you are seeking) is in a format you do not want, you press the [S<-->D] key to convert it between decimal and fraction representation.

If the result just obtained is needed to carry out further calculations it is more precise to use a fraction than a decimal representation: The fraction is exact, while it decimal representation is approximate.

The limiation is it can be only use in teh same workbook.

You can still that on the TI 15 explorer (look for constant calculations page 57 in your user manual or maybe the teacher's guide that you can download from education.ti.com)

1. First you define the operation you want to perform, using the OP1 key as follows
[OP1] [+] [6] [OP1] this sequence stores the operation you intend tu use repeatedly.
2. Since you want multiples you must start the sequence with 0
You do that by keying in the number 0
3. Press [OP1] repeatedly.

Each time you press [OP1] a counter shown on the lower left corner of the screen increases its value by 1, and the result (on the lower right corner) shows you the next multiple.

If you just want to add the same number repeatedly starting from some chosen number, in step 2 above use any number but zero.

[OP1] [+] [6] [OP1]

[OP1] [OP1] [OP1 etc.
will generate the numbers 2+6=8, 14, 20 etc.
