Want to install a pci adapter but no slot available. appears to only have 2 slots but are already taken up with added memory and im not sure what the other card is. There is ANOTHER slot outside of the case on the system board but im not sure if I can plug in there. Also it doesnt seem to line up evenly if I did put it on the sytem board. GRRRRRRR

The 2 slots that you see on the system board with memory (RAM) already inserted are NOT for PCI cards. The PCI cards on your computer are enclosed within the card cage. The procedure is much different than with most computers, so here is a link to an Illustrated guide as to how a person is to properly Add/Replace PCI cards.

1) Follow Anti-Static Precautions

Anti-Static Precautions:

2) TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again, upon your return.

3) Finding an open PCI slot look at the back of the computer. In the metal frame you will see slots going horizontally.
These are Expansion Slots.

You may have an add-on adapter card already installed, in one of the PCI slots.
The expansion slot cover for it is removed.

You should see expansion slot covers however, in the remaining expansion slots on the back of the computer metal framework.
Remove the one that corresponds with the PCI slot you wish to use.

Be aware that the PCI slot will not be directly in line, with the expansion slot.
When installing an add-on adapter card, you will see when the card is inserted in the PCI slot, the metal bracket on the add-on card, lines up with an adjacent expansion slot.

This will make more sense to you once you go to install the card.

[PCI USB adapter card is an add-on adapter card ]

Line the card up in the PCI slot. Note that there is a Locating Lug in the PCI slot, and a matching Locating Notch, on the PCI USB adapter card.

Also, at the same time line up the metal bracket of the PCI USB adapter card, with the metal framework of the computer case at the back.

Gently push the PCI USB adapter card down into the PCI slot.
Fasten the card's metal bracket to the computer's metal framework.

How to add usb ports to Dell 530

Suggest use a USB adapter card.

More specifically a PCI USB adapter card.

Here you see an illustration of your motherboard. Oriented as it is in your computer case. (Just no hardware components, nor cables are attached)

At the bottom of the motherboard are 2 White long expansion slots.
In the illustration they are labeled by the numbers 21 and 22.
If one of these slots is open, and not being used, you can install a PCI USB adapter card.

At the back of the computer, located towards the bottom, are the Expansion Slots.
Four horizontal slots.

If there isn't some sort of add-on adapter card already installed, all of the expansion slots will be covered with an Expansion Slot Cover.

If there is an add-on adapter card installed of course, one of the expansion slot covers will be removed.

Line up the PCI USB adapter card with the open PCI slot, you have chosen.
Now look at the expansion slots at the rear of the computer.
Notice what expansion slot that the PCI USB card's bracket, lines up with.

Go to the back of the computer, and view the small metal bracket on the bottom right. Loosen the Thumbscrew, and swing the bracket out. (Thumbscrew is supposed to just loosen, not come out)

Remove the expansion slot cover for your PCI slot choice.
Install the PCI USB adapter card.
Note that there is a Locating Lug in the PCI slot, and a matching Locating Notch, on the PCI USB adapter card.

Line them up, then push the PCI USB card straight down into the PCI slot.
Also watch the metal bracket on the back of the PCI USB card.
The 'tang' at the Bottom, slides down in-between the framework.

The top of the bracket has a half-moon notch, that lines up with a small 'dowel' on the computer case framework.
Make sure it is aligned, and the bracket is aligned.

What I am referring to will become readily apparent, as you go to install the PCI USB card.
If there are any other add-on adapter cards, they may try to fall out, when you go to install the new add-on card.

You just have to line them up, so their bracket notches are all on the 'dowels', and hold them in place. Then swing the 'door' closed. Tighten the thumbscrew.

If you have an Add-on card in the way, and by moving it to the other PCI slot, will allow you to install the PCI USB card, go ahead, and move it.
Doesn't matter. BIOS will find it, and assign an Interrupt Request.


There are two other expansion slots above the 2 white PCI slots.
The expansion slot right above the top PCI slot, is a PCI-Express x1 slot.
If this slot is open, OR the only one available, you can use a PCI-Express USB adapter card.

This is a PCI-Express x16 slot, and is ONLY used for a graphics card.

What Wireless card to buy

A version that is Wireless N.

You can install a Wireless N adapter card in any available (Open)
white PCI slot, or use a Wireless N adapter that plugs into any available USB port.

What are the three expansion bus slots that are found on the mainboard?

That motherboard does have 2 standard PCI slots, also a PCI express slot (the small slot). If these slots are already being used you can buy adapters which will convert a USB slot into a network connection.

In the illustration the PCI slots are at the bottom of the motherboard, and are named, PCI Slot 1, PCI Slot 2, and PCI Slot 3.

You can use any available (Open) PCI slot.
You can use a PCI graphics card. (PCI Video Adapter Card. Same thing)

Suggest you install the software (Drivers) from the CD disk that comes with the graphics card, First.

Turn your computer on, when Windows has fully loaded, install the disk into your optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)
Follow the simple instructions, install the software.

When the software is fully loaded restart your computer. Don't be alarmed as your computer won't use this software yet.

After Windows has fully loaded again, shut your computer down normally.
(Start > Turn Off Computer > Turn Off)

Unplug your computer from power.
Open the computer case.
Follow Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:

Your body carries Static electricity.

With the computer unplugged from power, working on a table, computer case open, TOUCH the metal frame of the oprn computer case.

There will be a metal slot cover, installed on the outside frame of your computer case. (Expansion Slot Cover)

This flat piece of metal will cover where you want the PCI graphics card to be.
It has to be removed.

There are several methods that this metal cover will be attached, to the metal frame of the computer case.

[ NOTE*
The metal expansion slot cover you have to remove, will Not be inline with the PCI slot.
It will be over one slot

Once you attempt to physically install the PCI graphics card, you'll see what I am referring to ]

1) To remove this metal cover look for an + in it. A flat tipped screwdriver is installed in the +, and the screwdriver is tipped down.
(The handle of the screwdriver is tipped down)

Looking at the back of the computer the expansion slot metal cover is horizontal.
The cover is twisted in an up, and down fashion to remove.
(Twisting from the bottom of the computer, towards the top, and then back down again)

There are small metal tabs that hold the metal cover in place. You are twisting the cover to break these metal tabs.

2) The metal cover is held in place by a single Philips head screw.
Remove the screw, remove the metal expansion slot cover.

3) I don't believe the a705w had a cover plate. A cover plate is hinged on one side. Usually a single screw is removed, and this allows the cover plate to swing to one side.
This action allows removal of all expansion cards installed.

Once the metal expansion slot cover is removed, line up the contact pins of the Video Adapter Card with the PCI slot.

Insert the video adapter card straight down in the PCI slot.
Install the screw that holds the video adapter card in place, to the metal frame of the computer case.

Close the computer case.
Plug your monitor into the video adapter card.
Plug the computer back into power.
WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.

Viewing the illustration of the motherboard, the Ethernet Adapter Card example I gave above, would go in either one of the PCI expansion slots.

These are white in color, and in the illustration are labeled - PCI Card Connectors.

If there is already an adapter card installed in both PCI expansion slots, then see if the PCI Express x1 expansion slot is open.

In reality, PCI Express is a better technology than PCI.

Shown on the motherboard as PCI Express x1 Card Connector.

This is an example of an Ethernet Card, (Ethernet Adapter Card), that uses the PCI Express x1 expansion slot,

The reason I have suggested buying, and installing an Ethernet Adapter Card is threefold.

1) You may have your Ethernet cable plugged into the Ethernet port of the computer,

[Number 3 - Network Connector],

and the built-in Ethernet is no good.
Reinstalling drivers May help, but the above is a sure thing.

2) You have an Ethernet Adapter Card plugged into one of the PCI slots, or the PCI Express x1 slot, and the Ethernet adapter card is no good.
They do go bad, and are economical to replace.

3) There was an Ethernet Adapter Card installed previously, but taken out before you received the computer.

How to use ISA Slot in PCI Slot

There is an adapter available if you look on computer sites for product purchases, try to google it as there or companies than make such items, might be harder to find as PCI and ISA are older connectors and even AGP is begin phased out an PCI express is the lading connector. Google ISA to PCI adapter and see what you can get your compangies to pruchases from. Your local computer hardware shop might have it call first and ask before driving out there, If you find nothing try calling Tigerdirect as they might have older stock, you never know, If to no avail you will have to try and locate an older Motherboard with the two conncectors on it and run that if possible, or find this certain ISA card you're talking about in PCI. Reply to my motherboard

It looks like your trying to install a PCI Graphics Adapter. If that is the case, I would try the PCI Graphics Adapter any Slot other than Slot 1 or Slot 2. That is unless, your PCI Graphics Adapter Card is a PCI Express, then that must be installed in Slot 1, if the Board supports it. If the PCI Graphics Adapter is a PCI-I Card then it must be installed in Slot 2.

Check AMD's site, they have or already implemented standards on their support chips. The standard, as I understand it, is Slot 1 - PCI Express, Slot 2 - PCI-I, if you're using those Slot for PCI Graphics Adapter.

It should be possible to use those Slots (1 & 2) for any PCI Cards that is not a PCI Graphics Adapter, be careful, I have not checked that out. Those do not handshake as Video Adapter, so the PCI card should not be thrown or overdriven, the PCI-Express and PCI-I, to my knowledge is only for Grahpics Adapters, should that be different, then Slot 1 for only PCI Express Cards and Slot 2 for only PCI-I Cards.

Me, for now, Slot 1 for Express, Slot 2 for PCI-I, and the rest of the Slot for all else. If your PCI Graphics Adapter is not an Express or PCI-I, install in any Slot other than Slot 1 or Slot 2.
