The procedure in a nutshell is just to boot to the first recovery CD in the series.

To boot to a CD instead of your harddrive, restart your laptop. Hold down F12 when it first powers up until the 'Toshiba, intouch with tommarow' screen pops up.

This should present you with a boot menu. You want to select CDROM and hit enter (make sure the recovery CD is in the drive) and the next time your laptop starts up it'll boot to your recovery CD instead of the harddrive.

Once the recovery process is started. From there just follow the onscreen instructions. Depending on the type of recovery you want to do, most want to go back to how the computer was set up when they bought it. So each time you are asked select the 'Restore to factory defaults'. Whichever way you decide, chances are ALL the data on your laptop will be erased, so be aware of that.

How to restore toshiba Satellite A215-S4747 laptop to "out of box" state? I dont have any disks for my laptop, too.

Is there an application on your system that lets you "burn" a set of CD/DVD "System Restore" disks?

Is there a "hidden" System Recovery partition on your disk-drive?

Can you contact Toshiba, and order a set of "System Restore" disks?

The Laptop is 13.3"HD satellite U505-S2002 dual

First of all, you say there may be a virus. The virus will corrupt your restore partition on the hard drive also!
Run a good quality Anti Virus Programme first and clear the virus out. If your files are still intact, recover your system with the recovery partition.
Hope you manage it.

before you format, try replacing the DVD writer another unit similar

buy recovery CDs here

i would restore the notebook to factory settings -- this is the best option in getting the computer back to the way it worked originally going to the factory settings management portion in the system and or use your recovery CDs to format and re isntall everything
