I added my post today with the same problem, and thought I'd share what I since learned. Apparently this "Alarm light/U150" is common with several Canon models. The U150 indicates a faulty electronic chip (on the ink cartridge). Though I tried cleaning the sensor with isopropyl alcohol, and also tried removing all the cartridges, unplugging the printer for 45 seconds, then reconnecting,etc. as I had read might help, I still had the same frustrating problem. Contacting Canon was the solution that worked for me. First I emailed, but decided I didn't want to wait for their response. A call to Canon Tech Support (1-800-385-2155) was quick and painless. They will more than likely send you a new cartridge, but you'll need to have your serial # & date of purchase handy.

I just had the error message V130 - check ink cartridge. I held down the stop/reset button for about 5-10 seconds and the problem was solved!

I am refilling the black ink of my canon printer using continuous ink container but the black color doesn't flow into the end of the hose and it didn't print at all, please help


  • Check the printer's power/alarm light. If it is flashing orange, count the number of flashes. Look up the flash code in your printer's user manual to diagnose the problem.
  • 2 Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges if the power/alarm light flashes 5, 7 or 15 times consecutively. This indicates that the issue is a cartridge error, an incorrectly installed cartridge, or an unrecognized cartridge. These errors can be fixed by reinstalling the ink cartridges. Make sure that you are using the correct ink cartridges for your Canon printer.

  • Turn on the printer and open the front cover. The ink cartridge holder should move to the replacement position.
  • 4 Verify that the colored ink cartridge is inserted in the slot on the right and the black ink cartridge is inserted in the slot on the left. Swap the cartridges and reinstall them in the correct slots if necessary.
  • 5 Check to see that both ink cartridges are level with one other and parallel to the top of the ink cartridge holder. If either cartridge is wedged at an angle, gently apply pressure to the cartridge until it clicks into the correct position.
  • 6 Close the front cover of your Canon printer and wait while the printer initializes the newly installed cartridges. This can take a minute or two.

    What you see moving is the print carriage. The carriage moves the cartridge, adjacent to the printhead, back and forth.
    Although the carriage is moving, the ink cartridge can not dispense ink because an obstruction is
    blocking the path of the ink.
    Remove the ink cartridges, inspect the cartridges as well as the cartridge holders for any foreign debris and reinstall.
    If the alarm message continues, I suggest changing the ink cartridges.

    The alarm sounds and it the printer states: Put in ink cartridge. It has both cartridges in them.

    Turn off the printer and try replacing your cartridge by pulling out the cartridge and place it back in make sure the ink snaps and placed it correctly after that turn on your printer.

    I replaced the color ink cartridge. Now there is an "E" flashing alternately with a "5". The alarm light is on steadily, and the black ink and color ink lights are flashing. How do I...


    E5 is a Cartridge cannot be recognized error.
    Reinstalling the cartridge could clear the alarm.
    If this does not work,
    Removed both ink cartridges.
    Turn off printer and unplug fron electrical outlet.
    Wait at least 5 minutes.
    This will let the printer reset itself.
    Plug printer back in and turn on.
    Printer will cycle and an E5 will appear.
    Installed back ink cartridges.

    I only want to scan but need a new cartridge - do i have to replace cartridge before scanning is enabled.


    You will need a new cartridge before you can scan.
    What you could try is to remove both ink cartridges.
    Turn printer off and unplug from outlet.
    Wait at least 30 minutes, this will let the printer to reset
    Turn your ink cartridge upside down for 2 minutes before installing.
    This will let some of the ink from the bottom to reach the printhead.
    Plug printer back in and turn on and install ink cartridges.
    This might work if your printer only detected a low ink condition at first.
    For the scanner to work, the printer must have no alarm.

    The problem is E 5 i cant print or use the scanner or make photocopy what i do


    If this is a canon printer.
    E5 error occur with no ink cartridges installed in the printer.
    This is the first alarm that will appear.
    Other alarm are E4 ,E7, E1,4 ,E1,5
    It seem that the printer is not detecting the ink cartridges.
    What you could try is to remove both ink cartridges and unplug the printer.
    Wait 10 minutes, this will discharge power to printer for printer to reset.
    Also for printer to cool down if the error is cause by overheating
    Plug printer back into outlet, turn on and install ink cartridges.

    If the ink was refilled, you need to reset or get a new chip for the cartridge. If it is a new Canon ink they will exchange it. Sometimes the pins in the carriage get bent and then they can't read the chip on the cartridge.

    Alarm flashes ink emptyhas ink! color was printing only yellow/green now prints only red/pink!


    any chance it has dried out? run the test / head cleaning / did you reset the cartridge when you replaced it? generally if one or two colors work - the problem is the ink cartridge or the head for the colors not working. Did you remove the "tape" on the new cartridge?
