Question about LaCie (300950) 400 GB Hard Drive
Don't know how much detail you need to help me, so heres the lot!:
I'm using a LaCie 320 GB external hard drive (USB 2.0) connected to my Mac iBook G4 running Mac OSX 10.4.11.
I was converting some film files from .VOB files to .DV files (using a programme called Mpeg stream clip) The finished files are any where between 4GB to 12 GB. I chose that the converted file be saved on my Lacie external hard drive but half way through the conversion process I got a message saying 'write error or disk full'.
Because my LaCie hard drive is showing to have 40GB free space left I though it could not be a 'disc full' problem so I thought there might have been some glitch in the file and that it might have been causing a 'write error' so I tried again with another file and again got the same message, I did it with another file (again trying to save it onto the LaCie external hard drive) and yet again the same thing happened.
I then tried the same conversion with the same 3 files but this time saving them onto my Mac hard drive rather than my LaCie hard drive and they all worked fine even though my Mac hard drive only has about 14 GB free space (just enough for what I was doing).
I then tried simply dragging/copying a 6GB film file from my Mac onto my LaCie hard drive and although it began copying, half way through I got a message saying 'Sorry, operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred'.
I then realized it wasn't a 'write error' but its more like my LaCie hard drive is behaving as if its full even though when I get information about the it's capacity it tells me there is still 40GB free space.
What do you reckon is wrong?
Hope you can help me sort it so I can use the remaining 40GB of space on my Lacie hard drive.
Simplest solution: back up the data on the drive and repartition it (which will wipe it). Otherwise it sounds like it could be a problem with the file tree or structure of the drive, the configuration files could be corrupt, some program could have stored temporary files in a hidden place that cannot be deleted without making the program delete them, etc. If you are on a mac, spotlight Disk Utility and use it to repartition. If you are on a PC use the search thing from the start menu and find a program called disk management (or something similar to that, you'll know it when you see it.) external drives are annoying. i kick mine into the wall periodically for good measure.
