Update your drive ?

as in firmware update?

if so, unless the drive is playing up leave well alone as if it goes wrong during update you will have a door stop.

Uninstall that software, and try to get a refund.
If your computer is working correctly, then _not_ having those updates is not a problem -- after all, when you drive your automobile, you choose to drive on "used" tires, rather than buying new tires every month.

You can download the manual for the system here:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=DOCS

From that download, you should find the information on reseating the customer removable units (Hard Drive, RAM etc)

Most random lockups are due to software problems and not hardware issues but software ones.

Most often Viruses and spyware are to blame. Sometimes updating a video driver or system bios may be helpful.

Dear Alan

you can download the sound driver for XP ,for your notebook from this site:

http://downloads.emachines.com/drive...07-003-001.exe

Note that for the sound to work you need to install some Windows Updates to support HD audio devices. So run Windows Update and do all the downloads.
And install this: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp26001-26500/sp26334.exe

Upgrade to XP

You can get an internal floppy drive for like $10, shipping and all, from NewEgg. Or you can try to change the letter designation of your USB floppy using the Disk Manager. I'm not sure if that'll do the trick, but it's worth a try.

What OS do you currently have?
Are you sure that a BIOS update is absolutely necessary?
I mean was Sony the ones who told you to do it?

Sometimes, these can be done from a CD, but usually have to be burned from an *.ISO image to work. If Sony has that, they should have explicit instructions for installation.
