Found this info for this error, may help you.

as soon as you try to play an MP3 or other audio file you get the following message: "Bad DirectSound Driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078 or 8878000A"
The Solution The way that we were able to fix the problem was by rolling our sound card driver back to the previous version and then we installed the latest driver for the sound card. Here are some detailed steps you can follow:

  • Roll the driver back to it's previous version (only tested with Windows XP)
    • Right-click on 'My Computer' and choose 'Properties'
    • Click the 'Hardware' tab
    • Click on 'Device Manager'
    • Find 'Sound, video and game controllers' and click the plus sign next to it to expand it
    • Find your sound card and double-click it, this will bring up it's Properties
    • Click the 'Driver' tab
    • Click on the 'Roll Back Driver' button. If there is a driver backed up for your device it will roll back to that driver, otherwise a message tells you that 'No driver files have been backed up for this device'.
      • If there is not a backed up driver for your sound card you may want to just click the 'Uninstall' button to completely remove the current driver that is giving you problems.
  • Install the latest driver from your sound card manufacturer's website
    • Find the manufacturers website and look for a drivers/downloads area
    • Download the most recent driver available for your sound card
    • Follow the instructions from your manufacturer as to how to install the new driver
  • Reboot your computer to make sure it loads the new driver
  • Try to play your MP3 or other audio file in Winamp
If these steps do not fix your problem then there are some additional steps you can take. Some computers have more than one sound card in them. If this is the case then it is possible that the default sound card has somehow been changed. To make sure windows is using the right sound card go to the 'Control Panel' and double-click the 'Sounds and Audio Devices' entry. Click on the 'Audio' tab and in the Sound playback area make sure the Default device is set to your preferred sound card. You could also try using a different sound card in your system if all else fails.
If you are still having trouble with this error you can press 'Ctrl+P' while in Winamp to bring up the Winamp preferences. Go to the 'Plug-ins' section and click on 'Output'. Trying changing the output from DirectSound output to WaveOut output and then close the preferences and close Winamp. Open Winamp again and see if it works now.

Music wont play through media player due to installing web cam

Hello my friend, i had encounter same problem as you have when i on one of my client's computer. You can reinstall the driver of your sound card. When you installed the program driver of your cam the sound card is affected due to some factor either the sound card is currupted. So my solution are the following: 1. Go to my computer icon then right click it the click properties. Then go to Tab name Hardware then click device manger then check if the sound driver is not installed or it is being corrupt. Then proceed to the reinstallation of your sound card driver. But if the sound card driver is installed then reinstall you windows media player. If you don't have installer then try this link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/10/default.aspx 2. No audio file will play on WMP, no dvd or audio disk will play...

Windows Media Player cannot play several files in the playlist. This might be caused by one or more problems.
To find information about the specific problems, click the Now Playing tab, and then click the blue or red icon next to each file in the List pane.
In some cases, you might encounter this error message if there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. For example:
  • Your sound device requires an updated driver. To determine if an updated driver is available, see Windows Update or see the sound device manufacturer's Web site.
  • Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see Windows Help and Support or refer to your sound device's documentation.
  • You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again

Sound card wont play root media files

Hi Hughdog
well, Biostar mobos are know for a lot issues, but depending too, on the OS, windows XP I presume, go on safe mode, and uninstall all audio drivers, and disable on the BIOS audio. then start the PC, and install the audio card. or if is a internal audio reenable again, redetec the drivers, and install them according to the CD and drivers. you should see the play device now and play music correctly.
good luck
