The actuator inside the sterring column that the lock cylinder turns is boken, this is a very complex job and is not for the home tech without a factory service manual.

The ignition switch has the detents and spring inside of it. The lock cylinder where the key goes in, just allows you to turn the cylinder which then turns the ingnition switch. The ign switch has the electrical connector going to it.

You have to remove the lock cylinder and the upper and lower plastic shrouds to access the ign siwtch.

Section 11-05: Steering Column Switches 1996 Taurus, Sable Workshop Manual
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Ignition Switch Removal

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301).
  1. Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover (04459).
  1. Rotate ignition switch lock cylinder (11582) to the RUN position.
  1. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
  1. Remove the two screws retaining ignition switch (11572).
  1. Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator.
Installation
  1. NOTE: A new replacement ignition switch assembly will be set in the RUN position as received.

Adjust the ignition switch by sliding the carrier to the ignition switch RUN position.
  1. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder is in the RUN position. The RUN position is achieved by rotating the ignition switch lock cylinder approximately 90 degrees from the LOCK position.
  1. Install the ignition switch pin into the actuator. It may be necessary to move the ignition switch slightly back and forth to align the ignition switch mounting holes with the lock cylinder housing threaded holes.
  1. Install retaining screws. Tighten to 5.6-7.9 Nm (50-69 lb-in).
  1. Connect electrical connector to ignition switch.
  1. Connect battery ground cable. Check ignition switch for proper function, including START and ACC positions. Also, make certain that the column is in the LOCK position.
  1. Install lower instrument panel steering column cover with screws.

  2. Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder
    Lock Cylinder Functional
    Removal
    1. NOTE: The following procedure applies to vehicles that have functional ignition switch lock cylinders (11582), lock cylinder keys are available for these vehicles or the lock cylinder key numbers are known and the proper key can be made.

Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01 .
    1. Turn ignition switch lock cylinder to RUN position.
    1. Place a 3.17 mm (1/8-inch) diameter wire pin or small drift punch in hole in lower steering column shroud (3530) under ignition switch (11572). Press retaining pin while pulling out on ignition switch lock cylinder to remove it from steering column lock cylinder housing (3511).
    Installation

    1. Install ignition switch lock cylinder by turning it to RUN position. Insert ignition switch lock cylinder into steering column lock cylinder housing. Make sure ignition switch lock cylinder is fully seated and aligned in interlocking washer before turning ignition switch lock cylinder to OFF position. This will permit cylinder retaining pin to extend into steering column tube flange hole.
    1. Rotate ignition switch lock cylinder, using lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
    1. Connect battery ground cable.

Although you will need to take out the lock cylinder to get at the actuator, you MOST likely will NOT need a new lock. You will need to pull off the upper shroud and where the separation between the top and lower sections of the column are you should be able to see the top half of the actuator by turning the key. take a hooked peice of metal and try to pull up the bottom half from the lower section of the column, hopefully you will be able to find the pin that fell out (99% of the time that's the problem) the pin goes through both peices horizontally using needle nose pliers put it or a replacement back in, now make sure the actual switch (under the dash) is in the run position by moving the actuator from inside the lock cylinder housing with a screw driver and replace the lock put it all back together, dishes are done.

Starter is loose

I don't understand what you are trying to say. If the key turns all the way to start and nothing happens, you probably have an ignition switch failure

The battery in my 1998 Honda CRV works fine. Had a problem with the key sticking, now the key turns in the ignition but won't catch to start the car. Not sure what to do

Sounds like the ignition switch is worn out(or the linkage from the lock cylinder to the switch has come loose or something like that)

Stuck eldorado key in DTS ignition now car won't start

Make sure your steering wheel isn't locked. Sometimes a key won't turn until you jiggle the wheel while trying to turn the key.

All my key does is spin back and forth and will not start the car, feels like it is not catching anything at all. could this be the ignition lock cylinder gone bad or something else? Thank you in...

Hi:
The problem is either your ignition switch, or the mechanical linkage connecting it to the lock cylinder. Often there is a small part that can break and cause your switch not to turn. Usually you can remove the electrical switch from the lock cylinder and replace it , but be carefull working in the area around the drivers air bag!

Dodge B350 Ignition switch

The lock the ignition key fits in is not the actual start switch. The actual switch is located on the steering column under the dash and is actuated by a metal rod that is pushed when you turn the key. as you turn the key see if you can feel anything moving on the steering column under the dash and then follow it to the switch and see if it is actually activating the start switch.
