Re: ps3 running through my Philips DVD
Well..this is one for the books...shall we assume you are using the infrared option for that PS3 to DVD connection? in that case, the alignment of the signal must be perfect..and the DVD is already driving the speakers, with hard wired sound, yes? Please describe the actual physical alignment of those components,...

i am trying to do same thing - i suggest connect ps3 via optical cable to hi fi red/ white cables via a optical/ rca adaptor, the ps3 is connected to tv via hdmi so play dvd via ps3 sound will play through hi fi - but remember dont need the yellow dvd cable from hifi dvd player to tv any more as you will be using the ps3 as a dvd player instead
Try this, although recivers have video pass through, it is not the best option for video to your monitor. Depending on what you have for input/output on your TV/monitor, and, if you can, you should run all your video components directly to TV via(best)HDMI(video and sound) or, component and digital optical(best) or RCA, Then run digital optical out from you TV out to receiver in. You can use your monitors menu to chosse what you view and only have the onr input to you reciever. ASll you have to do then is go through you recievers menu to get the audio. Less connections less hassle. In other words, you would run your sat tuner to tv inputsat or cable, then dvd to dvd, PS3 to video 1 etc., on TV/monitor, then the single audio output to reciever. Dave
It would appear from what you have said that you have everything connected properly. Maybe a silly question, but make sure you select the digital input on your LG to get the sound from the PS3. If there is still no joy, unplug the optical from the back of the LG unit. Look at the end of the Optical cable that should still be connected to the ps3. Is there what looks light a red light there? if so it means that the optical is getting to the LG system and the LG sytem's digital in port is Duff. If there is no "Red Light", unplug it from the PS3 and look directly at the optical out port on the ps3. Is there a Red Light there? if there is, you need a new optical cable. If there is no red light, you need to enable the digial output on the ps3. If you have and it's still not "red". the optical port is duff.
Most digital inputs are assignable, so go to set-up menu on your receiver and make sure the optical port (opt1 , opt2, etc.) is assigned to the input (vcr, aux, etc.) that you want switch to to listen to the PS3. You may also need to go into the PS3 settings menu and turn the optical to output the Dolby Digital signal. You have to do this with most DVD players, too.
Depending on the year of your model of VIZIO your digital optical output may be tied to the DTV input only. Meaning the only time you will have audio coming out of the digital optical output is when your using the tuner and your on a digital channel. If your television is newer and the digital optical output is in white on the back of the television than it is tied to HDMI and the DTV Tuner and you will pass audio through the digital optical output when using HDMI or the Digital Tuner.
Now to get connect the HT: Normally you would run a digital optical cable from the source device to the home theatre system. Meaning if it was a PS3 you would run a optical cable from the Digital Out on the back of the PS3 to the Digital In on the Home Theatre receiver. If it was a DVD player than you would run the optical cable from the DVD player to the HT receiver. If you have a newer VIZIO and the optical output is in white and not black than you can run HDMI from the PS3 to the VIZIO and then run a optical cable from the VIZIO to the Home theater receiver.
You will have to adjust the audio setting in the PS3 to run audio out of the HDMI port if it is set to run audio out of the Digital Out or AV out. Also, if your going to run audio from the PS3 to the HT receiver through the Digital Out then you need to change the audio setting in the PS3 to Digital Out.
1. Select (Sound Settings) under (Settings) in the home menu. 2. Select [Audio Output Settings].
3. Select the input connector on the audio device.
Channel numbers and audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use. AV is 2 ch. only, Digital Out is 2 ch. & 5.1 ch, and HDMI is upto 7.1.
