Backlight is acting like a bad flour. tube .. everthing else OK
When first starting monitor, it has a weak- flickering back light .. just started acting up recently .. everything else is GREAT!! I like the colors and extreme detail this monitor offers.
I'm running XP home .. does seem to be a monitor problem, however .. if the monitor is re-started warm I think it comes up normal .. leaving it in green-flash mode does not change startup flicker after cool-down.
Could there be a startup driver in trouble within the monitor?
I'm concerned that one time soon, the backlight might fail altogether ...

It appears you may have a bad backlight. If you can see the picture content with a strong light shining at an angle to the screen while it is dark, then it is definitely the backlight. Most sets shut down shortly after getting a failure signal from the backlight inverter although you do not mention that happening.
The backlight uses two or more Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) tubes, and they'll have the same flickering as a failing standard fluorescent tube. If the light has a pinkish cast to it, this is a common sign that one or both of the tubes is bad. You may see the flashing on the top or the bottom and the other half of the screen will be dark; this means one tube is dead and the other is dying.
Either a dying backlight or bad internal connection. If under warranty, RMA it with place of purchase. If not, you can try opening it up & tightening any loose connections then reassemble & test. If problem still persists, replace the backlights.
This is a typical symptom of a failure of the capacitors on the power supply board. When the filter capacitors go bad the power supply can not start up correctly so you get flickering or even no display. You can repair this unit by replacing the bad capacitors and a fuse on the power supply. This is an easy repair, it just requires a little soldering. Akeru, It may or may not show up again. My guess is that it will. This seems like a power supply/inverter/CCF tube issue. The lamps try to fire up but due to a possible fault in the Switch-Mode-Power-Supply and or the Inverter circuit the SMPS goes into shutdown and does a self reset after 5 seconds. And then repeats the whole cycle again. Well if the unit is over 5years old you can do several things. 1. See if DELL can do a swapout. Send your's+$40-$90 to them. They send you a same model REFURBISHED (new CCF tubes/inverter/smps) and a short 30day min warranty. 2. You can locate a electronics repair shop ( TV/VCR/DVD/Monitor) that knows all about cold cathode fluorescent tubes and their power source, Inverter type. 3. Try to effect repair on your own. Flickering on the screen can be caused by defective hardware in the computer or by improperly installed software, but it can also be caused by interference from external devices. The following examples describe situations in which your screen could start flickering:
Screen starts flickering because of interference caused by devices which generate magnetic fields, for instance:
a TV set
a laser printer
hidden power lines
Apart from interference, an incorrect setting in your system CMOS setup can also cause flickering. On some systems it is possible to distinguish between interlaced and non-interlaced monitors. The setup of your system should always be colour non-interlaced.
Proximity to the monitor of fans, air-conditioning units or other devices with rotating motors.
The number of devices using power from the same electrical line. Are you overloading the plug?
Monitor placed on an unstable surface.
Improper video drivers, this is a software problem, see section B
An improperly configured or a defective video card.
Take a look at the capacitors and see if you have any weak one. An obvious way to spot one would be one bubbled up on top. A bad cap won't always be bubbled up. The monitor probably can operate until the voltage drops under 8 volts. Also possible if power supply check out good would be a weak backlight inverter.
It could be your LCD backlight giving you problems. With the computer on and the monitor power LED green shine a flashlight in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Look for the ?Start? button, if your backlight is not working you?ll see a faint ?start? button if you look closely. If you do see the ?Start? button then either your backlight tube is bad or more often the inverter board is bad.
