Cannot make or receive calls. Display says "out of range"

You don't say type of phone, cell phone cordless home phone, what? If it is a cordless home phone and it does this on all handsets then the base station is defective, if that is the case the best thing to do is just replace the phone.

How do i get volume on my binatone 3325 handset

Press C/8 to unmute the microphone.

complete installations
Plug the power adapter
& line cord
into the base station.
Plug the power adapter into a 230Vac, 50Hz
mains socket, the other end of the line cord
into your telephone line socket.
Warning: Always use the line cord provided in the box.
Other line cords may not be compatible and may not work.
Warning: Only use the power adapter supplied.
Others will result in non-compliance with the safety
specification EN60950, and will invalidate any approval
given with this apparatus.
Warning: The Base unit needs mains power for
normal operation, not just for charging the handset batteries.
Installing and charging the batteries
Slide open the battery compartment cover.
Place the 2 batteries with the correct polarity,
as shown.
Slide the battery compartment cover back.
Put the handset on the base and charge for
15 hours before first time use. The handset
beeps when charging starts.
Warning: Only use the AAA size NiMH rechargeable
batteries.
If you have a Broadband Line
If you connect your telephone to a line with a broadband connection, you will need to
insert a micro-filter between the telephone and the telephone line, otherwise you may
get interference between the telephone and the broadband, which could cause
problems.
In a home with broadband, every telephone must have a micro-filter connected, not just the one at the telephone point that your modem is connected to.
If you need more broadband micro-filters, contact your broadband provider.

Connection and Conditions for use:
You can connect your phone to a direct exchange line (DEL) on a local
exchange with its own phone number; to an extension socket
connected to a DEL; or to an extension on an approved compatible
PBX. Do not connect as an extension to a payphone.
The ringer equivalence number (REN) of all equipment (phones, fax
machines, modems, etc.) connected to an exchange line must not add
up to more than 4, otherwise one or more of them may not ring and/or
answer calls correctly. This phone has a REN of 1, and most other
telephones have a REN of 1 unless marked otherwise.
Handset - Base Connection
1) When purchased, all handsets are already registered to the base unit
and should link to it when they are all powered up.
2) To use your cordless handset and base unit together, you must be
able to establish a radio link between them. The signal between the
handset and the base is in accordance with the normal standards for
a DECT phone: Maximum range up to 300 metres outdoors or 50
metres indoors. Be aware that:
> Any large metal object, such as a refrigerator, mirror or filing cabinet,
between the handset and the base unit may block the radio signal.
> Other solid structures, like walls, may reduce the signal strength.
> Other electrical equipment may cause interference and/or affect the range.
3) Do not place close to another telephone, a TV or audio equipment - it
may cause interference.
4) Out of Range warning. If you hear a warning tone during a call,
and/or the sound in the earpiece becomes faint or distorted, you may be
going out of range of the base unit, so move nearer to the base unit
within 20 seconds, otherwise the call may be cut off.

What is an out of range indicator

Out of range means your hand set cannot communicate with its base set. Several possibilities ... one ... you are simply too far away (more than 100 <> feet) ... two ... you have battery issues ... three ... you have metal based wall paper on the walls of your home. There are other reasons ... these are the ones I have had experience with.

SIGNAL BOOSTER FOR CORDLESS HOME PHONE

The only way to increase the range on a cordless phone is to improve the antenna system. Since the antenna is in the base, the easiest thing to do is move the base to a better location, as high as possible. If that is not possible, you can go to any radio repair shop and ask them to open the base and solder an external antenna connector to it. Mine was done for five dollars. Then buy an external high gain antenna of the correct frequency and place it as high as possible in an area free of obstructions. This will improve your range by between 10 and 50 percent. The simplest way is to Google long range phones and make sure you find one at 900 mhz which is a legal frequency. The other phones are illegal in North America because of their potential to interfere with frequencies on such bands as police and fire and amateur. Also, make sure it does not put out more than one watt, (still 10x the power of the average cordless phone). The Engenius is probably the best cordless phone which is legal in Canada and the US but it can get pretty expensive. There is no easy way to do it. I consider myself an expert because I have been researching the issue for many months. I recently bought an ATTCL82209. With the base in a good position with clear line of sight, mine gives me a range of 525 yards which is almost a third of a mile. With an external antenna I have obtained 800 metres which is half a mile. But an urban environment has so many obstacles and variations that consistent long range with any phone is impossible. There is a reason why so many people pay exhorbitant monthly fees to use a cellphone, cellphones are the only real solution to urban communication problems, and the cell providers know it. If you are in Canada, www.3centcell.com, might be a viable solution. Trust me, I know my stuff, I have spent months researching every possible angle.

Range extender for cordless phone

Ours behave similarly. The solution is to position the "base" (one connected to the phone lkine physically) in the center of the home so that the limited range can reach the remote phones at the periphery.
These phones operate at 1.9GHz. At that microwave frequency radio signals do not penetrate walls and floors very well. 2.4 GHz phones suffer increased "path loss" and are no better. The solution for any of these microwave phones is more transmitter power, which is illegal.
900 mHz phones actually work better because at 900 MHz nature offers less signal path loss", but try to find them in stores! For the same transmitter power level a 900MHz phones will have noticeably greater range.
The 1.9GHz D.E.C.T. phones also operate differently from other types of cordless phones and I believe that also contributes to dropped calls and the phone's inability to ring when a call arrives. At the fringe of its range you can see how it struggles to establish a link. Once established it will work well and then simply drop the call when you least expect. I am not a fan of the DECT phones, but they do not interfere with 2.4 GHz wireless routers, etc.
