The compression release should be a metal button that projects from the cylinder head and extends out from the cylinder cover so that it can be depressed before starting. There should be an immediate lessening of compression when pushed. If no such result, the release mechanism should be removed and cleaned, or replaced. Proper starting is to pump the primer button several times to fill the bulb with fuel, then set the choke closed, the ignition on and set the fast idle on the throttle. Pull the engine through several times until it pops, then release the choke part way, and try to start. Don't pull the throttle during this as it will release the fast idle setting. Once the engine fires, the compression release should self-reset for maximum compression. Hope this makes sense and helps!

If still under warranty have it serviced (authorized dealer not Joe's lawn mower). There should not be a fee (paid by Husqvarna). There have been carburetor problems. If you adjust it your warranty will likely be void; Joe's small engine service just as likely to void any warranty. Are you using a fresh 40:1 fuel oil mix. The will not start with choke set is normal. Start procedure in your OM says listen for sputter and disengage choke. Almost all new saws have similar start procedure.

New Homelite 16" chain saw is difficult to impossible to start.
Read and follow the start procedure in the manual, most say to open the choke once the saw attempts to start. Most operators miss this or do not hear the cough and flood the saw. Your manual is probably similar, if not successful with the following maybe time to return it. One thing that might impact starting, what is your elevation? Your saw was setup at near sea level, if you 4000' it may need an adjustment. The store where purchased will probably recommend someone if asked.

  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls; no more than 4).

As you requested Steve; but you say you have spark.
Ignition module gap
Place a business or index card between the fly wheel and coil, rotate until the magnetic attraction pulls everything tight together. Tighten the coil screws, rotate the flywheel until the attraction eases and remove the card. Ensure nothing contacts when flywheel is rotated.

Is the choke open? You have enough fuel you should not need the choke. I think she is flooded. Do you have your OM handy? Might be a good time to review to flooded procedure. Probably similar to warm start with a lot of pulling.

Lost my manual. Forgot how to start the darn thing?
Might it be beneficial to include a model number where the answerer cannot see the item in question? The embedded numbers (heading) are often someone elses best guess.

How do I start rental model 96.
Place the saw on full choke with the switch on. Pull the rope until it fires. Place the saw on half choke, and pull again, and it will start running. Half choke should release as soon as you hit the trigger.

Chainsaw starts fine, but after it warms up and I turn it off it doesn't want to start back up. Seems to be flooded? Put in new plug and filter, and always has fresh gas. What can I do?
You provide no model number. A look at your OM may have been beneficial. I think your warm start proceedure is the problem. Are you trying a warm start with ANY choke applied? Your OM should be similar to this:

You might also remove the starter cover and inspect the crank and flywheel for a bad key. I have heard a couple of complainrts lately. Remove clean and reinstall the muffler and spark arrestor probably a good idea too.

Can't restart my new husqvarna 450 chain saw after a little bit of time using it. i followed the instruction manual both times.
The manual may not be clear, read warm line 3 below, read it again. The 450 manual I read says something similar under warm start. Are you opening the choke after turning on the ignition? Before pulling the starter rope? Flooding is the most common hard start problem with 2-cycle engines. If you are opening the choke I recommend you contact Husqvarna for guidance. They will likely send you to a neighborhood dealer, gratis.

Could I please have the basic start procudure for the poulan 2375 Borrowed from a friend. won't completely turn over
1) Have fuel tank full of a mixture of 50:1 gasoline and 2 cylce oil.

2) Have bar chain oil tank full.

3) Push down choke to full

4) Pull over engine 2 times.

5) Push choke off

6) Pull over engine. If it does not start you may have flooded engine ect.

Start at 1.5 CCW form lightly seated then tune for performance like this:

CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.
Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.
There are 2 wav (sound - idle & full – may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too.

I think your starting procedure may be the cause of flooding. Flooded is the #1 cause of hard starts in 2-cycle engines. Read carefully the recommended start in your manual. most miss the second note. It should be similar to this (read 3, read it again):
Warm start in the manual says 1/2 choke BS. Close choke, (sets fast idle) open choke, pull rope.

Mcculloch 3516 chain saw, does not always start.
It must have spark, fuel and compression to run. Your task is to figure out which is missing.
Sometimes electrical components quit operating once beyond a certain temperature. Does it always start cold and become tempermental when warm?
IMO most hard start problems on a chainsaw with a good fuel delivery system are flooded.
