Oven does not heat but broiler does

Oven will not heat. The igniter is not glowing. The broiler works, the burners work as does the timers and clock. Only the oven will not ignite.

This is a Bosch HGS3052uc Gas range

Igniter for oven does not glow. Igniter for the broiler (which is on top of the unit seperate from the oven) works fine.

First thing to suspect would be a weak igniter....see if the amp draw while the igniter is glowing matches the amp rating of the gas valve, the value will be on the side of the valve, if the amp draw of the igniter is lower than the rating of the valve you would need to replace the glow coil/igniter.

The most common cause of this symptom is a defective ignitor. Oven ignitors can glow and allow enough current through to open the oven gas valve but just not produce enough heat to ignite the gas immediately (see the link below).

In that case, replacing the oven ignitor is the usual solution.

Oven Problems Replacing the Igniter

The oven won't ignite. The broiler does and the top works fine.

This problem is commonly attributed to a bad igniter on the bake manifold in the bottom of the oven. As the igniters age from repeated use, they can become weak and longer function properly. Just because they glow, does not mean they are good. If you are experiencing ignition problems, the following link explains a little theory about how these igniters work and how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3575727-replacing_an_oven_igniter_on_a_gas_range

The burner manifolds in most ovens each use a glow bar or electrode type igniter with a gas safety valve to ignite. Both oven manifolds are controlled by the Electronic Oven Control (EOC) board, which is your clock/timer on the control panel. If the surface burners work, but the oven does not, the problem is usually not a gas related issue. If a single igniter is still working (i.e., the broiler still works), its more than likely NOT a control board issue, either.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

Prices vary between these sites, so shop and compare. The first three sites listed also offer helpful exploded view diagrams to help you locate and properly identify the parts you need.

NOTE: It is common for the BAKE igniter to require replacement more often than the broiler, due to the frequency of use.

If you have any questions please post back with your complete MODEL NUMBER and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Oven does not light. Top ignitor glows red bottom

Since BOTH oven manifolds and surface burners are usually fed from the same source, this is probably the result of failed igniter(s) in the oven. This is assuming that your surface burners are working, or course. If you are trying to light the BAKE manifold, the broiler manifold is used on some model to speed up the pre-heat process. So, you may see the broiler attempt to light as well. If you have tried using only the broiler by itself and it still does not light, you may have a weak igniter on that manifold as well. Double check your symptoms.

If this is a GAS range, as these igniters age from repeated use, they can become weak and longer function. If you are experiencing ignition problems, the following link explains a little theory about how these igniters work and how to replace one:

Neither the oven nor the broiler burners will light. In both cases, the igniter glows, but no gas to the burner.

UNLESS DOUBLE OVEN THE BROILER BURNER HEATS THE OVEN. AND THERE WOULD ONLY BE ONE IGNITER. WHICH IS PROBABLY DEFECTIVE AS THAT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WHEN USING IGNITER.
