If you can remember a time when it worked, the simplest solution may be to use system restore to a time when you think everything worked. If that doesn't do it, go to Control Panel, open device manager, and and check for any
yellow checks for your CD/DVD ROM drives, and your sound, video and game
controllers. If there are none, your system is go. Also go to your
audio manager on control panel, and set it up for whatever speaker
configuration you have. But most likely, your CD/DVD burning program may be corrupted. Remarkably, the drives don't work unless you have a functioning non-microsoft CD/DVD burning program. They don't need drivers. Find out what program you have by downloading Belarc Advisor, a free program which not
only tells you everything in your computer, with model numbers for
hardware and all of your software (with their unique codes), and will
also inform you if you are missing any needed Windows updates. Once you know what CD/DVD burning programs you have, go to Acer and download any updates (you can't go to the manufacturer of the program, because they make special editions for different computer manufactureres). If that doesn't fix the problem, you can find and reinstall your original program (you may have made copies of all your programs when you first bought your Acer). You can copy the original programs that came with the Acer using Acer eRecovery Management. (You can read about your Acer by clicking on "All Programs" and then on "AcerSystem", where you will find your manual, where you will find the following info: The eRecovery allows you to backup/restore the factory default image, and reinstall any applications and drivers. (In this instance you want to reinstall your CD-DVD burning programs). You just need to select the Burn Disc button, then select the application you want to burn to the disc--in this case, you CD-DVD buring program you identified with Belarc, burn it, then reinstall it. (You might want to burn all the applications the computer came with, just to have them for backup). That should get you going again. Let me know if you run into any problems.
