Although it reads dvds and cd's, chances are the blu-ray reader is knackered. contact Sony and advise them of the problem to get it repaired. useful note remember to remove your hard drive as they wipe it, along with all your saved files and profile details when they take it away.

Disc Read Error

If a dual layer disc is not functioning, there is a problem with your laser. This is a frequent issue with Playstation 2 consoles. As a laser starts to fail, the first type of disc to stop reading is the dual layer disc. Eventually regular DVDs will start skipping in the middle of the game and loading times will increase. Eventually it will stop reading DVDs as well. The solution is a replacement laser. You can find one at the following website for $30 including shipping:

Ps2 wont play DVDs

Your PS2 laser is wearing out. When the laser starts to go, first games will skip... then eventually the PS2 will stop reading DVDs altogether. If you keep using it to read CDs, it will eventually stop reading those too and the laser will die altogether. Here's a website that will help you identify your PS2 model, show you how to replace the laser, and they sell parts and do repairs too

How can I get my ps3 to play dvds, cds, and ps3 cds

For cd's go in the xmb to music, for dvd's and blu-ray movies goto movies in the xmb.
Game blu-ray discs will be started from in the game menu in the xmb.

The option run automaticly should be turned on in tehe settings of the ps3 by default, else you have to start them manualy, as described above.

Also read the manual that came with the ps3,
it holds manny answers to alot of your questions that may arise further on.
You can find the manual also here:

Wont play when i insert disks only the games on there

I had a similar problem. My PS3 did not start the disk based games. Those disk based games were not visible in the game menu.

I did not have problems with the normal movie DVDs or movie Blu Rays. Those were working fine. Also downloaded games were working ok.

In case you have the similar problem, you should try the following steps;

The PS3 has a special Recovery Menu, which you can access in the following way;:

1. Turn off Playstation 3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION 3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION 3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION 3 System

Select option "Rebuild Database".

After PS3 has executed the DB rebuilding operation, the disc games will be visible again in the menu and are starting automatically when inserted to PS3.
