Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console
The loud noise could have been a result of ALOT of dust in the cooling fan. (you said it was a used system). It would have held the heat in and caused the internal parts to fry.

3 Red Lights: General Hardware Failure
This could one or more of many different problems. Before doing anything rash, I suggest you just send in your xbox provided it is still under warranty. If it's not, then there are ways. The most heard of way that I know of is knows as "the towel trick." Below are links I have found providing more information on this "trick".
BEFORE YOU GO AND DO THIS: I urge you to not leave your xbox alone as it could potentially start a fire. Not likely, but possibly.
I personally believe this to be quite possible. There have been numerous cases reported to verify that this can work. It is not 100% full-proof. I can tell you that it will not void your warranty. If you have a warranty, it may just provide a quick fix for you while you wait on the packaging.
Other than that, you can find more info online on ways to fix it but may involve voiding your warranty.
